75% of VMT is from trips longer than 10 miles. California needs to rapidly expand electrified regional and intercity rail to meet our climate goals. We need commitments today, not vague promises and hydrogen pilots, and real reform to speed up the delivery of rail projects.
I think entirely too much about how California’s climate plan explicitly says that converting to EVs is not nearly enough to meet our greenhouse gas reduction targets so we need to reduce VMT 25% by 2030, and then we do basically nothing to try to achieve that goal

It’s good to think about how we could rebuild the suburbs into something better
oh wow i don't recall doing this... but apparently at one point i put together a little study of how to get a euro perimeter block by single developer in seattle w/ our ridiculous regs (max 2 single stair conditions per lot, so would need to do lot division)

Bus crimes
This is the greatest story ever told:

A person in Hamilton, ON stole a city bus and then proceeded to make the stops along the way, allowing passengers to board and exit freely. The person actually refusing someone looking to board with an expired pass. 🔥🔥

I feel like I just found a gold nugget! During my daily streetview ambling I just now discovered a 1925 apartment building designed by RM Schindler that was thought to have been demolished for the 101 freeway. But it wasn’t! It was *moved.* (first screenshot is from US Modernist)

When I got the chance to write this article, I wanted scholarship that put the preservation of the White House in context. I see three themes in the story:

1. Reification of expertise
2. Growth of executive power
3. Use of DC as a testing ground

White House Architecture Was an Honor System. Trump Noticed.
For 125 years, informal norms constrained what a president could do to one of the nation’s most famous landmarks.

Every investment we make in transit is undermined by actions like this
LA is building a new $1.5 billion freeway into LAX.

The very same airport where we just spent $2 billion on the people mover — actually, more like $3 billion, plus another $900 million if you count Metro's investment in the LAX station; so let's just say $4 billion — to make cars go away
Air traffic control
The LAX-pressway must be stopped

This one highway is projected to cost 85% of what CA has spent on high-speed rail over 15 years and hundreds of miles. If we can afford this, we can afford high-speed rail.
The entire proposed Highway 37 Solano-Marin super bridge is estimated to cost $11 billion, all to replace an existing road between a couple of suburbs. And it's proposed at 114 feet wide.

For comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge is 90 feet wide.
Caltrans has released a cross section for the ultimate (raised viaduct) version of SR-37.

Now maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if you were building a road that you planned to keep at 4 lanes wide, I don't think it would look like this.
