🏳️‍⚧️ I'm the trans rights activist that they warned you about

Deputy Director of Communications at the Human Rights Campaign.

Previously spent 20+ years impersonating a journalist. I have thoughts about the news
Pinned
when you tell a trans person that we are brave, you are reminding us that it requires bravery to exist as a trans person, that we are under threat, that many (including you?) would not choose to live as we live, or to be as we are (as if it was a choice for us)

do you think we need these reminders?

true story: in many (most?) newsrooms the reporters and editors can clearly hear each other's phone calls, and if we catch a colleague on a call this bonkers, there's gonna be questions and incredulity immediately after

I have thoughts about silverware that are less inane than this, and I confess that I have thought very little about cutlery

I was annoyed that a random reply I made earlier today was doing numbers, I find the notifications annoying, but then Mara Wilson liked it just now and so now I'm quite glad 😊

you ever have a thought pop into your head and then you immediately think, "oh no, that's not good, why did you think that? Don't think that way anymore."

the 2nd best takedown of Shatner's ego was when they killed off Captain Kirk by having him fall down a small hill
"I can't believe I kissed you!"
"Must have been your lifelong ambition!"

the best takedown of Shatner's ego ever, and he had to deliver both lines 😂

it's not so much what they want but what they -need- -- to them, there's no point in social media at all without targets like us to attack, which is why there were so many complaints about bsky being dead and empty. that's what happens when everyone blocks you on sight!

Gotta love going to a new doctor and realizing that even tho you filled out all the paperwork in advance, nobody ever saw any of it.

some advice for those dealing with upset marginalized folks while coming from a position of privilege:

we'll get intense sometimes, because we're upset. It's not about you … unless you're determined to make it about you

when you make it about you, you're just adding to our upset. let us process

yeah sure we’re defending the use of the word demonic now, what a healthy and good faith debate
Much is made about the use of “demonic.” But this student clearly comes from an evangelical background and if you have an experience in those settings, and Spiers says she does, you know they use that term not as a way of saying “you’re an evil demon” but as kind of a verbal crutch to convey that
