I can definitely smell the sharp tang in the air from both the water and the crisp fall air.

One is a fishing board with figures on it tending to nets. A kayaker and a small motor boart with two figures and a yellow lab are going past.

The other side of the pier is lined with shops and a restaurant, the buildings in bright colours of red, yellow and green. Many people are walking the pier pulling wagons, pushing strollers, or riding bikes.

Behind the pier rises a thick forest of trees, their leaves all red and yellow. A few houses are interspersed within the trees.

In the background a large white lighthouse rises against a sky streaked with sunset colours: yellow, pink, orange, and blue. Birds pepper the sky.

In London, at the end of the 17th century, a fashion for unusual dials came into being. One popular form was the 'sun-and-moon dial'.

In this fine example, the side-hinged case is engraved all over and the outer case is tortoiseshell.

This is so striking. I love the diagonal line and how it establishes a kind of negative space that's the sky from the buildings in the lower two-thirds.

There have always been exceptions to expected fashion norms. This is a hand corded linen jacket that has a tailored fake waistcoat front but a robe à la française sacque back. Early 1780s, it was presumably a personal preference, evidence of the individual #KelvingroveArt #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

I have a lovely 'page a day' art gallery calendar on my desk that's usually a nice pick-me-up when I'm feeling kind of blah.

Me (to friend): I felt like I was under surveillance all day
Friend: Yikes, she can see your soul!
Me: And she has a few notes about it!

In early modern England there was a tradition that witches sailed the sea in eggshells. Children were advised to smash holes in the shells so that they became useless for any witches hoping to cause storms at sea.
