Yarr, in *my* day, Bluesky was nothin’ but a bunch of horny furries and Neil Gaiman. That was afore Gaiman got run out of town on account o’ bein’ a creeper.

Took my first ride in a Waymo last night. Well, technically very early this morning. Honestly, I was most impressed by its unwillingness to move until everyone was buckled in.

Where America stands, one year after the election.

A fascistic movement controls the government; they are building an authoritarian state; but they have not been able yet to extend authoritarian rule across society. A democracy no more, but not a consolidated autocratic regime yet.

Escalation, Authoritarian “Normalization,” or a Democratic Turnaround?
One year after the election: What we can say with certainty about the state of the Trumpist assault, where uncertainty lies, and where America might go from here

Well, my dad and I can agree at least that billionaires should not exist.

“Yeah,” he says. “The influence that George Soros is able to wield just goes to show…”

🤦‍♂️

Oh man — missed the game and just saw the results. Gutted because I was really rooting for the Blue Jays.

My Legend of Zelda fanboyism finally won out over my “leave no trace” principles. I’d been trying to figure out what to do with this old sword for a while. My first thought was to cast it into the sea, but finding myself some 2000km from the sea in any direction, an obscure outcropping seemed right.

This is the way.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense has awarded medals of merit to 11 officers for disobeying direct orders of superiors during the martial law fiasco, orders that they deemed to be contrary to the constitution and endangerment to democracy.

Today, my 6 y/o tripped, knocked my charging nintendo switch off my desk and stepped on it. Not her fault, but now the right joy con stick isn’t working anymore. Suddenly I have to decide between buying an aftermarket joy con, or upgrading to a switch 2 earlier than planned. Bugger.

Conversation with my mom this week. That escalated quickly. 😳

How you view Emmanuel Macron depends on who you support politically:

- LFI: Macron is a fascist globalist elite bank baron
- PS: Emmanuel Macron is a right-wing capitalist & hates poor people
- Ensemble / Renaissance: Macron is a centrist
- LR: Macron is a socialist
- Far-right: Macron's a Commie
Is Macron regarded as centre right in France?

I just watched in frozen horror as an elderly gentleman poured an entire cup of fake maple syrup into the DIY waffle maker at the hotel breakfast bar. To their credit, the staff handled it really well and now I’m kicking myself for not having been quick enough on the uptake to stop him.

I still can’t get over how goatee dude is holding his sidearm.
Case in point. Less-than-mediocre dudes finding jobs at ICE.

First ads that caught my eye at Charlotte airport: Some kind of whiskey, Billy Graham Library and MARSOC. Well then.

This fancy AMEX card is giving me a window into a world I kind of knew existed, but hadn’t really seen before.
Got to the airport in Providence early enough that it made sense to go camp out in the lounge for a while and have some breakfast. The number of people putting back cocktails in here before 8AM is, frankly, shocking.

Super disorientating in the space of a week to start in the shadow of Pikes Peak, drive across the wastelands of the Mountain West to the Pacific Shore, then suddenly find myself on the Atlantic Coast. Now heading back again.

Oof. That last sentence is such a gut punch. This has been a long project - at least as far back in the modern era as Reagan's "nine most terrifying words". So frustrating and sad.
The history teacher is going to be stuck on “why didn’t the Biden admin punish sedition and why was a seditionist even allowed to run for president again” for a long, long time…Americans stopped believing they had a functional government long before they started believing they had a fascist one

Breakfast at Corner Café, an hour or so browsing used books, coffee at Empire, then a ten mile hike on the Cliff Walk: not a bad day out in Newport!

The Newport American Legion unironically choosing this particular Horace quote to headline their war memorial in 1923, three years after Wilfred Owens’ poem was posthumously published, was either really tone deaf or really bad timing.
