Trump and the GOP are using this shutdown, by design, to withhold pay, extend furloughs and create more hardship for federal workers.

Their goal is to outsource more services to Trump’s donors in the private sector…for profit.

Well yes. But who defines "essential"? I just find it unfathomable. All our public servants get paid. Rightly. It's new stuff that isn't currently funded until Parliament agrees Budget that hits the shelf. But that doesn't involve people we haven't hired yet

It's unfathomable to me as a Brit. You see, if a budget doesn't pass Parliament, civil servants, local authorities, police, fire, ambulances, military, all still get paid

Government still works. All that is prevented is new tax changes, infrastructure changes etc. Everything that "was", still "is"

Has someone sent me a DM recently? Since the Online Safety Act over here, which requires me to upload actual British ID onto an American site (which has an authoritarian POTUS), I can no longer access them on here

Hope so! Whilst I do have a tendency to wander offline for a few days at times (there's only so much stupidity i can absorb), I don't blank my old friends. I'm only fretting because I can't confirm it's spam t-shirts for sale 🤣

On another note, I thoroughly recommend these 4 Gardner books 👍

Four books by Frank Gardner on my bookshelf. Crisis, the first, Ultimatum, the second, Outbreak the third, and the most recent hardback of Invasion. The order runs right to left. Because I didn't want a taller hardback in the middle of the shelf upsetting the line height. Because I'm a sad git...

Well quite. We have NHS over here. Is it perfect? No. However tax we pay monthly to have it is LOWER than your current "health insurance premiums"

Have I made use of my annual NHS allocation over years? So far, not really, yet I begrudge nothing to those who have needed it. One day, it will be me

Thanks! I do get exasperated by how easily people skip to handing everything away. For nothing. To oligarchs who hoard so much, leaving so little for everyone else. Why?
