Forbes picked up our article explaining how designating rural school districts as "education preserves" can protect them from charter and voucher expansion.

Do We Need Rural School Preserves?
A new paper argues that rural school districts are facing an existential threat, and proposes a new sort of preserve to safeguard these districts and the students that they serve.

As a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Viola Ford Fletcher bravely shared her story so that we’d never forget this painful part of our history. Michelle and I are grateful for her lifelong work to advance civil rights, and send our love to her family.

Perfect is the enemy of good.
Take a lesson from me and don’t wait until you are “through” w/ the project (trying to perfect it) before sending it out. I’ve been blessed in my career to have great feedback on my manuscripts, but I was often too exhausted to really dig in.
First peer reviews of my book landed last wk. Now that I’ve sobered up from the excitement of knowing this project will have a great home, the real revisions begin. Another set of reviews is on the way. Feedback is a gift & the academy makes sure you get plenty! Excited to share this book w/ y’all!

Haven't received as many contributions as usual for this year's lists--could be many things, but one aspect is surely that our ability to get this in front of people is much diminished. If you know folks whose stuff should be on here, please suggest it! contingentmagazine.org/yearly-pub-l...

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

The High Cost of Targeting International Students in Texas
The Trump administration’s bans and airport detentions are derailing the academic dreams of students who carry out important research—and sometimes pay hefty tuition—to attend Texas institutions.

More and more people are saying, etc.
the economic success of the U.S. is significantly built on the land grant universities and in particular their excellent agricultural science tradition.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

Bruce Hornsby turns 71 today.

Of “The Way it Is”, he said: “I grew up in Virginia, and you could still feel the old lines — racial lines, economic lines — running through everyday life. The lyrics came from seeing those things .. I wasn’t trying to preach; I was just writing down what I saw.”

Insulting, yes, but also outrageously reckless given teacher alienation policies that have already led to a teacher recruitment and retention crisis nationwide.
