Used @quizizz.bsky.social’s AI tools to build a quiz today and it saved me enough time I got to grade a whole other assignment. Friday wins.

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all."

I think if it WERE legal to assassinate CEOs of large companies … that would totally justify their enormous salaries.

This Friday is Native American Heritage Day.
A great resource is the "Native Land Digital" site - native-land.ca
Put in any address (such as where you live) to see which indigenous peoples lived in that location.
Then click on the links for those nations to learn more about them.

My 8-year old niece: (joking) “You traveled the world!”

Me: (joking back) “I did! Timbuktu is nice this time of year!”

(Pause)

My 8-year old niece: (serious) “Is there a Timbuk-one?”

IXL.com, one of my favourite class resources, has released an AI-powered workspace: Spark Studio. I’m going to spend the next few weeks and months exploring what Spark Studio can, and cannot do for us in the classroom.

The answer: a much much better day!!
(A caveat: my two most disruptive students were absent today, I will need to repeat when they are here.)

Yesterday I set a task that was too challenging for my students. It went so, so poorly. By the end we were all frustrated with each other.

Today, we’re going to reset, take a step back, and try something more simple.

Let’s see how it goes.

Where are the active tectonic zones on your world? Is there a structure analogues to the “Ring of Fire” where earthquakes and volcanoes are more common?

Yeah, the real learning opportunity in this tech is for highly knowledgeable students to critique what the AI presents.

Of course: it’s an easy thing and I could see myself - exhausted at the end of a long week - just letting my 5th graders have these chats because it LOOKS like learning.

The only value in this exercise would be if students who already know about these figures were having these chats to learn about the failings and pitfalls of AI.

Of course, this is easy and there is money to be made here, so these chats will replace research soon.

I strongly dislike being the tank.

I get very little satisfaction from being the main damage-dealer in a combat situation and I like facing the problem of being squishy.
