Listening to this course on Biblical Archaeology and the professor mentioned how we wouldn't have the words of Jesus if not for other people writing them down like how we wouldn't know anything Socrates said if not for Plato and like hello, what about Xenophon's Socratic dialogues?!

THIS is what makes my head spin: The president is not a moral figure in any idiom, any land, any culture, any subculture. I'm not talking about the liberal enlightenment that would make him want the country to take care of the poor and sick. I mean he has no Republican values either. He has no honor among thieves, no cosa nostra loyalty, no Southern code against cheating or lying, none of the openness of New York, rectitude of Boston, expressiveness and kindness of California, no evangelical family values, no Protestant work ethic. No Catholic moral seriousness, no sense of contrition or gratitude. No Jewish moral and intellectual precision, sense of history. He doesn't care about the life of the mind OR the life of the senses. He is not mandarin, not committed to inquiry or justice, not hospitable. He is not proper. He is not a bon vivant who loves to eat, drink, laugh. There's nothing he would die for - not American values, obviously, but not the land of Russia or his wife or young son. He has some hollow success creeds from Norman Vincent Peale, but Peale was obsessed with fair-dealing and a Presbyterian pastor; Trump has no fairness or piety. He's not sentimental; no affection for dogs or babies. No love for mothers, "the common man"" veterans. He has no sense of military valor, and is openly a coward about war. He would have sorely lacked the pagan beauty and capacity to fight required in ancient Greece. He doesn't care about his wife or wives; he is a philanderer but he's not a romantic hero with great love for women and sex. He commands loyalty and labor from his children not because he loves them, even; he seems almost to hate them — and if one of them slipped it would be terrifying. He does no philanthropy. He doesn't - in a more secular key - even seem to have a sense of his enlightened self-interest enough to shake Angela Merkel's hand. Doesn't even affect a love for the arts, like most rich New Yorkers. He doesn't live and die by aesthetics and health practices like some fascists; he's very ugly and barely mammalian. Am I missing an obscure moral system to which he so much as nods? Also are there other people, living or dead, like him?

Minimizing conflict in my life is a key tenet of maintaining good mental health for me but it does inject drama into small decisions like choosing what color socks I'm going to wear in the morning. IS this a day for gentle seafoam green? Or more of a bright purple moment? I CAN'T FUCK THIS UP

Serious shoutout to the hyperfixations that have really lasted me these last few years: making fragrances/body products/wickless candles, mushrooms (the non-magic kind, lol), and now salsa machas. These are ideal bc I can buy ingredients (YAY!!) but everything I make is consumable so I consume it

Good morning I'd like to share some skincare tips bc I just looked in the mirror and said, "Wow, my skin looks amazing!" So what I did was I got rid of all the fancy expensive stuff I'd tried over the years from my Skincare Phase and just started only washing my face once a day at night.

Really into the scene in Book 19 of The Iliad where the Greeks are getting all fired up about going into battle alongside Achilles but Odysseus is like "Whoa whoa whoa wait pause. I am SO fucking hungry oh my god, are you guys hungry? Is anyone else like, dying to have dinner right now 🍽"
From Emily Wilson's translation of The Iliad: But sensible Odysseus spoke up. “Godlike Achilles, you are very strong, but do not urge the Greeks to fight the Trojans or make them march to Troy without a meal. The battle certainly will not be short after the armies meet and once the god inspires both sides with eagerness to fight. Tell them to sit beside the ships and taste some food and wine, the source of strength and courage. No man can fight all through the day till sunset fasting. He may be eager in his heart to fight, but gradually his limbs grow heavy, and as he moves, his body starts to hurt, and thirst and hunger overpower him. Someone who has his fill of food and wine can fight all day against the enemy.

Been interested in trying shrooms again so I joined a mushroom church here in San Francisco in order to access the sacred sacrament and wrangled my bio dad into coming with me so anyway we did shrooms together tonight and had a great trip. Happy Shroomsgiving everybody! 🍄

I love when they talk about outfits in The Iliad. "I'm an Achaean (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly bronze armor. For example today I was wearing a golden full-length lion skin and fine sandals on my well-oiled feet. A lot of Trojans stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them."

I agree!! Classics fandom especially has thousands of years of wank and fanfic and discourse and big opinions which makes it soooo fun. What is academic study like this if not an excuse to eventually lead entire classes on your hyperfixation?! The dream!!!!
