Every year I stop myself from posting “now look here you lot, my books would make an excellent Christmas present” in October because it’s way too early, and then I forget until it’s way too late.

Hope I’ve hit the sweet spot this time.

Early signs suggest an outbreak of bird flu (H5N1) in Oxfordshire. Following a dead swan in Witney which was subsequently confirmed by testing to have avian influenza, cases were confirmed yesterday in Blenheim and on Port Meadow.

TV/film drama trope: character finds box covered in dust and blows the dust off (sometimes coughing in case you haven't quite got the message). Who does that? Have you ever blown dust off a large object? Don't you wipe it off with a cloth, or your hand, or your sleeve?

Visited the Ancient High House in Stafford today. I was particularly taken with the juxtaposition of apotropaic burn mark, fire extinguisher, and fire safety sign 😁🔥🕯🧯

Refuge isn’t weakness. It’s an investment. And the returns are human, immeasurable, and generational.

Britain once understood that. It can again.

Sat in for this interview (as a tech) and was utterly fascinated by the conversation. The fact that we so often think of democracy/not-democracy as a binary is at the core of why we rarely see authoritarianism coming.

It's time to wise up. Thank you @srd.bsky.social for such a wise explanation.

Which is why I recommend @bankuet.bsky.social, and additionally they enable food banks to get what they are short of.
This is what I try to always tell people: food banks can do way more with your money than you can, due to bulk buying deals. And they can do way, way more with your money than with the canned goods you didn’t want to eat
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"
