My thoughts on AI, after seeing a very liberal (and ostensibly pro-environment) friend post blatant AI slop as if it were cute...
A screenshot of a post. It reads: "Folks... If you use AI for any reason, you can't in good faith claim that you care about the environment. Their server farms use up humongous amounts of electricity. The servers themselves require top-grade clean water. It doesn't matter if you use AI to generate a cutesy avatar or a meme or a story to read during your lunch break. It doesn't matter: each time you use it, you accelerate our planet's demise. And I'm not even going to mention that every single generative AI was trained on stolen art - including one of my earliest ebooks - because I guess y'all care even less about that... There's no such thing as ethical generative AI use. Not even a little, no. It's like being a little pregnant, or just a bit dead - it's a binary choice, yes or no. You can do better."
