This video remains my favourite example of what youtube can offer. Without youtube I never would have known there were people who visited North Korea specifically to fly on vintage soviet planes. I've done some wild stuff for fandom but I don't know if I'd do that.

If you know basic kabbalah it's actually not too hard to make a golem out of a labubu. Don't recommend it though. They have a pre-existing body-dharma. As soon as they wake they run straight for the sea. V hard to counter. Lost the first one. No idea what it's doing out there. Moved like lightning.

no-fault divorce saved so many women from suicide and men from poisoning.

I read an interesting factoid and decided to do a little digging. This is a chart of female suicides in the US per 100,000 residents. See that MASSIVE drop from 7.4 in 1970 to 5.7 in 1980? It kind of lines up with the meme I've seen.

1970 is when no-fault divorce first became legal in the US.
A line chart of female suicides in the US from 1950 to 2023. There is a noticeable drop from 7.4 per 100,000 residents in 1970 to 5.7 in 1980, with a continuous drop until the early 2000s, with the number peaking at 6.2 in 2018.

I always get such a huge wave of imposter syndrome when someone reads one of my books. Like, oh no, you're a person who will realise this is terrible and I am a fraud.

Done! Goodbye Remus and co. You were devastatingly important to me when I was eighteen. My own writing will always bear the mark of you, even if it's in the form of writing something purely to spite your creator, like my most recent novella. Which everyone should read: www.maryborsellino.com/girl/

I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna orphan my harry potter fic.

(I mean tbf I've already orphaned literally all of my Batman fic except for one gen story, and I wrote hundreds of thousands of words in that fandom, and I've orphaned most of my other fandoms too, so this isn't quite the act it could be.)

It's important to have the skill of facing a month where an international trip leaves you stranded with no money, your grandmother dies, and you get the flu, and you can then look at an assignment draft and go "this will be a passing grade, I can't do more than that right now" and be okay with it.

it was said by someone like half a year ago that learning how to deliver passable if not good work under both immense pressure and short notice is actually an important part of the college experience and an incredibly useful skill and the person who said that was right

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

I was writing the Wolf House series for years and kept track just fine. I think what the poster here doesn't understand is that if AI is doing the actual writing and you're just prompting and editing, you're not engaging with the text as closely as when writing. Writing helps you remember specifics.

Game trailers really appending 'cozy' to things in ways that tell me no writer was involved.

"Create your cozy character..."

I'm sorry, my what? What about the character creator is cozy? Is it just an aesthetic to you? Is it just sweaters and low-poly red triangle noses?

Blueksy help me find some good books on ancient and imperial Chinese history. I could use some reference material covering the gamut from Xia to Qing, and perhaps readers on the classics, Confucius, etc.

It's becoming difficult for me to find thorough references online without worries about AI

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.

"Can we sell black characters in this political climate?" That is what Ubisoft asked itself and then answered, "No." Which is a skill issue and bigotry on THEIR part because black entertainers are out here selling their wares EVERY DAMN DAY, antiblackness be damned. Our culture MOVES NUMBERS.
