Growing up, I recall a lot of people asking, "How could the German people let this happen?" but no one ever asked, "Would they have let if happen if they could effortlessly access detailed information about current events and history and had also been warned all their lives to not let this happen?"

We live in an era when misinformation and disinformation are more elaborate and ubiquitous than ever before, and yet people are staunchly unwilling to admit they've been misled about anything, ever.

Fuck this, I'm going back to bed.

"even if it's AI, it's at least true" hard to overstate the damage this stuff is doing to people's brains. we're gonna be cleaning the slop out of archives for decades

agreed! and mostly for the better, imo

it’s a cinephilia less interested in classiness, more open to underground work, genre, etc, and i’ve noticed younger cinephiles jumping far more quickly into experimental stuff

In general I think there’s been a major shift in the past 20ish years where people went from learning about films in books and review sites to Letterboxd/social media and podcasts, which has reshapes the canon in pretty dramatic ways.

I know it likely wasn't the intention, but I chose to read the screenshot less as a criticism of Democrats themselves and more of those who would shoot down any criticism of them by insisting that the opposition party is entirely powerless.

Wait is that why I can't find a decent job?

Ryan Murphy must be stopped. I've been saying this for years.

I've tried and the responses I get are akin to, "Well, I don't know what that priest or journalist did. Maybe they were breaking the law. Who am I to question law enforcement?"

We're seeing horrible videos, the city is burning down because of amphiba.

Pretty neat that I'm still capable of being shocked.

It's like if a uniformed Nazi was photographed setting fire to the Reichstag but the other Nazis just went right ahead with their plan to blame the communists.

"well what are the Democrats supposed to do" I don't know! They're supposed to know! I'm not the one who sought and obtained a political position that would require me to know what to do when the ruling party attempts to install the President as a dictator!

Right, it's not financial self-interest that drives spending on conservative causes; it's short-sightedness. The case can easily be made that improved transit and affordable housing improve returns on investment over the long-term, but whether the wealthy have patience to listen is another matter.
ecarney.bsky.social
This is part of what I mean when I say we need to be building networks of real social support, and I don't see it happening. We show up for protests together and we promote one another's mutual aid funds, but I don't see much evidence of people helping new activists to actually make a living.

As a Dem campaign staffer, at the end of every race, there was always this "oh we'll help you get jobs" bullshit and it literally never amounted to anything. It was super demoralizing, but the right does it very well.
ecarney.bsky.social
But then, when Democrats spend money, for instance, on social media influencers, they get yelled at *from the left* for trying to manipulate the public into supporting, you know, the only viable alternative to the Republican Party.

The most galling fact about obsolete Democratic spending is that instead of helping build up a center-to-left ecosystem, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭-𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚.

Most Dem ads go to local TV news. They are putting billions of dollars in the pockets of Fox, Sinclair, Nexstar, etc!

It's so strange to me that Republican lawmakers can go on television and acknowledge that they're only able to maintain power by excluding some people from representation, and their supporters never seem to consider whether that reflects poorly on the party.

I'm not an expert and have no specific data to back this up, but it seems to me that Democrats spend a shit ton of money trying to assess whether or not their positions are mainstream, while Republicans focus on spending money to MAKE their positions mainstream.
matthew.flux.community
You may not realize this, but Democrats have *more money* available to them than Republicans do.

But Republicans are fucking masters at efficiency and network marketing. They maximize every dollar.

Democratic organizations keep hiring the same failed consultants. They need new blood.

So this is the difficulty. Not just how do we get to a deal, but how do we get to a deal we trust will be honored when Johnson is here *promising* to let Trump impound and take back whatever he wants from what they pass?
atrupar.com
Q: Rescission are something Dems have said is a reason for a lack of trust. What rescissions are you discussing?

JOHNSON: We have more than $37t in debt. We're doing everything we can to get us back to sound fiscal responsibility. What does that include? A rescission package is part of our process

Right, it's not necessary that people actually go to prison for this to have a chilling effect on opposition. It's enough to know that you might face investigation and have to go to court. Not everyone will give up in advance on that basis, but some will!
