How would you fare on any of these "modern people dropped into living history" shows? - Colonial House. Pioneer House. Tales from the Green Valley. Victorian Slum House. Texas Ranch House. 1940s House. 10,000 BC. The Colony. Time Crashers. #survival #oldways #BBC #PBS

If life without electricity seems like an arcane mystery, I beg you to watch one of the many BBC living history shows about modern people plunged into that life. 1900 House. Turn Back Time: The High Street. The Victorian House of Arts & Crafts. Anything with Ruth Goodman in it. #survival #oldways

People have only had electrified houses for the past 150 years or so. Practice for your next outage. Can you make a meal? Do you have a constructive pastime like sewing or reading? How do you wash dishes or yourself? Go to bed early & get up with the sun so lighting is less of an issue. #survival

What happens at your place when the power goes out? We have a small generator for the fridge & internet now, but before that the house would go blissfully quiet. I use my treadle sewing machine or spinning wheel, or work in the garden in good weather. #survival #homesteading #prepping #oldways

Today's bounty came from underground! Sedge root for baskets, madder root for dyeing things red, potatoes I grew from seed, and a few garlic shoots that came up from a missed bulb. The longest sedge is 31 inches! And I didn't have to drive 2 hours to get it! #gardensky #weaving #roots #homesteading

In hyperinflation situations, when you need a wheelbarrow of money to buy a loaf of bread, barter will help you survive. Goods, knowledge, services, time... person-to-person trade is as old as humanity. Any kind of trade still helps both parties.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of finding one constructive real world offline thing you can do to use your particular skills in service of fighting fascism as a psychological defense against the constant drumbeat of fuckery
my hot take is that I don't think it's this website specifically that's toxic. the Circumstances are toxic and nobody really knows what to do about it so they come online and scream. and if I may offer an alternative: actually going outside and screaming feels better.

Before and after scouring. Doing the fleece in smaller batches because I don't have a huge washtub that I can pour 10 gallons of hot water into at a time, and my water is full of iron so I use collected rain water. 4 washes to get the dirt and most of the lanolin out. #homesteading #sheep #shetland

I harvested half of the remaining carrots that I grew from seed this year, trimmed and washed them, steamed them, then had them as part of dinner with butter and herbed salt. Sadly I forgot to take any photos of the process, hopefully you'll believe me 😅 #homesteading #selfsufficiency #gardensky

A year ago, I came up with the phrase Doom Dopamine: the unconscious reward we give people for spreading doom.

Take a minute to like positive posts.

Cause when alarmist content goes viral & positive posts get 5 likes, it engineers our brains to think doom is rewarding & positivity is not. 🧵

It's inefficient to get out of bed in the morning only to get back in the same bed at night. Stay in bed all day to avoid this

Disappointed by how many people are shitting on homesteading as either "nothing but tradwife BS" or "a bunch of idiots who don't know what they're doing LOLOLOL" and I'm over here quietly being a queer witch growing carrots and spinning wool like the experienced freak I am.

Natural dyes tip: Get a rusty unloved cast iron pot and leave it outside to get even rustier. Use that iron water as a mordant and color shifter to react with tannin dyes such as oak gall and acorns. It will "sadden" (mute) colors and deepen browns. #naturaldye #traditionalskills #oldways
