this genuinely is socialism in miniature. the idea is good, but it all depends on competent execution
Turns out Mamdani's controversial proposal for government-run supermarkets isn't so novel. Other cities also are toying with the idea to bring fresh, affordable food to communities that do not have easy access to it. Good WSJ read (gift link)

incidentally, Mamdani apparently intended to meet with Trump since he won the mayoral election, for what seem like uncomplicatedly rational reasons: "'I will be reaching out to the White House...because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city,' the Mayor-elect said."
Mamdani will call President Trump before taking office, he says in News 4 interview
See Melissa Russo’s full interview with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani below. Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani plans to pick up the phone and call President Donald Trump prior to taking office, he told NBC New ...

Trump is planning an executive order to preempt state laws on artificial intelligence, Reuters reports. He’d withhold federal funding.

This is an important response to those who say states can't hold ICE officers accountable to the law.

Really difficult to overstate the fury one should feel that the GOP and institutions like the New York Times went all in on transphobia as some mortal threat to women and girls while covering up something like this.
When you read these Epstein emails, you start to understand why so many prominent conservatives are obsessed with checking the genitals of children. It's a big thing for them!

what a vexatiously tendentious misreading. as if any analysis of global economic and productive forces which identifies two distinct and incongruent interests implies a moral judgment predicated on a moral binary.

The central global political divide is not ideological; it is about fossil fuels vs renewable, and ultimately post-scarcity, energy supply. Fossil fuels and petrostates are not going to go quietly, but China is rendering them obsolete with a speed and decisiveness that have few historical parallels.

this makes no more or less sense than requiring that your astrological sign be listed on your passport. there's no rational purpose being served by this requirement, much less one in which the state also has a legitimate interest.
Reminder: It benefits nobody in a way to list sex assigned at birth on passports, there is no requirement to include it, this is just about punishing trans etc. Americans.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court will allow the Trump administration to enforce its anti-trans and anti-nonbinary passport policy during litigation.

The unsigned, four-paragraph order effectively reverses two lower-court decisions. The Democratic appointees dissent.

also worth noting that Art Spiegelman's "Maus" had been serialized for at least 4 years by the time this came out. The two works should be read alongside each other
It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life
