A year after Barnes & Noble opens in Wicker Park, nearby indie bookstore forced to close
Volumes Bookcafe, which has been open for a decade, immediately saw a “significant” drop in sales after Barnes & Noble moved into the century-old Noel State Bank building in October 2024.

Kidlit community, nothing fills me with self-doubt and disappointment more than these annual best of the year lists.

If you’re feeling blue, remember it’s subjective, and this year I’m seeing very few of my faves (the ones I didn’t work on) recognized.

Let’s all raise a glass to the unlisted!

Now feels like a good time to tell you about my favorite recent book purchase: Posters for Change, from Princeton Architectural Press. It’s got a huge collection of posters perfect for protest, and proceeds go to non-profits.

These scam marketing emails can look credible (esp. the 1st time seen) but there’s often a tell, like a weird version of the email address in the signature block. Or lack of website, LinkedIn, or socials. But, sigh, not always even that… Be wary.
Fyi #writingcommunity #amwriting #booksky

I get a few if these a day, sigh. Blockety blockety block.
PSA: If you're an author & you get a chatty email from a marketer, or book club that praises your book & bashes Amazon's algo before offering to 'help', usually with 500 to 10,000 reviewers, it's just a ChatGPT automated marketing scam.

It's the new Nigerian prince email, brought to you by 'AI' 🙄.

No Democrat should vote to keep the government open unless ACA funding is restored for the millions of Americans at risk of losing health coverage next year.

Remember that this funding is on the chopping block because Trump and Republicans want to give the richest Americans a giant tax cut.

It's one thing for a random NY politician to make a quip like this but Jeffries is national leadership. He's the leader my own Rep in the House is supposed to follow. I don't think it's funny, I think Jeffries is undermining the whole party with this insult and by failing to endorse Mamdani.
Following Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s criticism of Democratic leadership for refusing to endorse Zohran Mamdani, Hakeem Jeffries’ spokesman mocks: “Chris Van Who?”

Update: we just received a statement from Macmillan/Tor taking full responsibility for failing to register copyright, promising to make us whole and pay us any settlement money we lost out on due to that error, and promising to find & correct the lapses that caused this.

Every pub should do this.
this part right here is gonna create massive resentment in the industry. the copyright registration system and the fact that you apparently have to pay a bonus fee for protection from big companies pirating your work (and that tons of publishers never paid the bonus fee...)
Instead of working to include as many writers as possible in the settlement, the plaintiffs instead agreed on arbitrary and minimal definitions of which books would be included. It’s almost like they wanted a quick win – any win – even if they screwed over most authors. 4/

Would 100% watch a sitcom in which Cuomo and Dershowitz end up roommates, Dershowitz is denied a pierogi every episode in exactly the same way, and Cuomo runs for successively lower-stakes office each week, only to lose again.

One element of producing videos like Mamdani is being Mamdani, and Andrew Cuomo is no Zohran Mamdani.
To be clear, Mamdani's videos are much better than what Cuomo is producing. I don't want to slight @boringstein.bsky.social or @andbeps.bsky.social.

But there's been a lot of discourse over whether candidates just need to produce videos like Mamdani to win, so this will be a useful counterpoint.

Everyone, no matter where they live, what they look like, or who they love, deserves to see themselves and their experiences in books—in bookshops, schools, & libraries.

Reading helps us understand ourselves, our world, & one another.
