@joebankswriter.bsky.social Because it's his birthday and science fiction -- and I just blathered about it earlier in the day, check out Brautigan's In Watermelon Sugar (1968)! super bizarre/surreal/different :)
Despite the miserable cover, I'm a hug fan of Richard Brautigan's New Wave SF(ish) novel In Watermelon Sugar (1968), which charts the memories of a nameless narrator attempting to write a book about the community and inhabitants of iDEATH. sciencefictionruminations.com/2021/09/12/b...

You know how easy it is, especially in the post-Twitter era, to avoid the insipid National Post and their op-eds of no consequence?
Oh look, a a hot take on the Charter by the academic equivalent of Kevin Sorbo! Please. Stop giving these dim losers your attention.

It’s not a Jerome Charyn novel until someone gets a tapeworm. From Maria La Divina.

There's a bit of a longer thread here, but this is the essence of it.

Also, as @alexdecampi.bsky.social said in that thread, you should probably distrust the heroic struggle that writers offer up as their process for writing a novel.
If there's any secret to writing it's that you need to be left alone, unstressed, untormented by the evils of this awful world, for a little while every day, and that's a luxury.

Oh, man! admire and model thyself after the whale! Do thou, too, remain warm among ice. Do thou, too, live in this world without being of it. Be cool at the equator; keep thy blood fluid at the Pole.

I never get tired of short fiction about/around junk food.
“All aboooooooard!” screams Tim Can along with the intro to “Crazy Train.”

... and so, too, we scream, about today's Casey Jo Graham Welmers story
