I had to read Schmitt for a history course I took in the 90s and thought it was kind of weird that we were reading a Nazi jurist but for the last few years I’ve been, “Oh, that’s why we read that book.”
just idly remembering when i was assembling my dissertation for final submission in 2017 i was chided by one lovely professor at a conference, who felt my use of the phrase "the return of fascism" to describe the present moment was "alarmist"
"Every single day for four years I have thought about Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt gloating that you can dismantle a democracy right in front of a liberal's face piece by piece and all they'll do is convene committee meetings till the boots are in the halls."

Ugh. My wife and kids have been sick with a cold all week. So far, I've managed to hold it off but tonight I feel it coming on strong, just in time for the weekend.

Stupid false consciousness of my immune system; it's working for the man.

Peter Mandelson sent a secret memo to all UK media via press regulator IPSO asking them not to "take photos or film, approach, or contact him via phone, email, or in-person." Scottish newspaper The National published the memo in full. Hilarious. I love the Scots. www.thenational.scot/news/2583451...

This article interviews people who don't live next to a new multiplex, speculating about what the neighbours might think.
Did they try to talk to some actual neighbours?

it's not just that Mamdani is charming af (he is), it's that he is normalizing the idea that children are full members of society that we all share a collective responsibility for
From @acyn.bsky.social (posted on X)

"Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?

Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tail…

Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.

Mamdani: Yes. It’s also the golden snake."

The Wright Museums Instagram page is HILARIOUS. Think The Office but it's the staff at a Museum for Black History. Better believe this is on my list of places to visit.

Archives matter - but not to the Carney government. Canada has only ONE federal funding program for community archives, and they just killed it. Gone.

I'm actually super embarrassed for the city and furious about this

It's gaslighting and basically implies reporters are liars at a time when press freedom is already under attack. #journalism
The City of Vancouver continues to deny there was a media exclusion zone during the April 2023 Hastings decampment.

I witnessed this, I made video showing how media were excluded (in this story: thetyee.ca/News/2023/11...) & now a BCHRC report has confirmed there was an exclusion zone.

Is this what Brenda Bailey means when she says “We must do better things with our dollars?”
Foreign corporations get billions in taxpayer funding. What do they do with it? Strip our resources and leave working people to pay for the mess.

It’s the BC NDP playbook: privatize the profits, socialize the costs.

I have spent the past two years debating the credibility of the Gaza Health Ministry’s numbers with supporters of Israel. It turns out the Israeli military agrees with me, not them.

This is probably an unpopular opinion but your dog doesn’t “need” to be off-leash to get appropriate exercise and stimulation, especially in a sensitive temperate rainforest. Dedicated, gated and fenced off-leash areas are more appropriate for off-leash dog activity.

As someone with a 7-year BA in Theatre I can’t complain about my salary but some of these numbers are eye-wateringly massive. The higher echelons at UBC pretty much live on a different planet than the staff and most faculty. Never mind the students!
Meanwhile they've slashed our TA budget and we can't afford to provide lunch at our department meetings anymore
UBC’s most recent financial report, the 2025 Statement of Financial Information, reveals that the university’s top ten earners received a median salary well over $650,000.
