“Parliament had turned over its constitutional authority to Hitler and thereby committed suicide, though its body lingered on in an embalmed state.”

“.. Inside the White House, top advisers joke that they are ruling Congress with an “iron fist,” according to people who have heard the comments. Steve Bannon, the influential Trump ally, likened Congress to the Duma, the Russian assembly that is largely ceremonial.”

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

And the gap will grow as ever falling costs of renewables trumps (cough) US attempts to bully trade partners to buy expensive fossil fuels they no longer need or want

🌍 For the FIRST TIME on record, renewables generated more electricity than coal in H1-2025.

Renewables rose 363 TWh (+8%) to supply 34.2% of global power, while coal’s share fell to 33.1%.

New study looks into stabilizing 100% renewable energy systems over multiple bad weather years.

It concludes that the best approach is a little more overcapacity (e.g. 3.5% extra) as that is much cheaper than excess seasonal storage.

1/ New research @lut.fi presents the first global analysis of inter-annual storage for #100RE systems in 145 regions doi.org/10.1016/j.ap.... Strategic generation overcapacity is a significantly more cost-effective solution than building massive storage.

I hear you but our ~$45000 annual premiums for mediocre medical coverage for two people are telling me that the media and politicians are nowhere near outraged enough

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.
Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.

I’m more interested in policy and overall trends than specific projects

Also interested in learning from countries and regions that are pushing the fastest and whether/when we will start seeing overall reductions in overall GHG emissions

And still going gangbusters outside 🇺🇸

Will be interesting to see how things play out in the US with Trump pulling out all the stops to block cheap renewable energy

Puzzling that gov’t agencies esp in areas of public interest don’t require research papers to be published in journals available to those who paid for the research—taxpayers

There are researchers like @christianonre.bsky.social who seem committed to publish in open journals—we need more like that

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America
