Community group for locals. Successfully put pressure on TfL to replace escalators Cutty Sark DLR (May 2026). Now pushing for TfL to manage Greenwich Foot Tunnel. https://www.change.org/p/transfer-greenwich-foot-tunnel-management-to-transport-for-london

Agreed & simply not right for one council to be responsible for the management of these cross borough links. Also, there’s something not quite right about the maintenance contract with Precision lifts. The life of the lift is obviously lessened without proper maintenance.

It goes without saying this petition is for the Woolwich foot tunnel too (north lift broken since 2022!). #FixTheLifts #GreenwichFootTunnel #WoolwichFootTunnel #ActiveTravel

🖋️ And if you agree the Greenwich foot tunnel is a useful transport connection for people getting around London and that the lifts should be properly managed and that TfL should take this role on then sign here:

Great campaign from the @escalatenow.bsky.social team who got TfL to fix the escalators at Cutty Sark.

Now pushing TfL to fix the lifts in Greenwich foot tunnel built by London County Council 113 years ago for dock workers to cross the river.

When TfL was set up they got road not foot tunnels. 🤦‍♀️

Campaigners have launched a petition calling for control of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel to be transferred from Greenwich Council to Transport for London.

The tunnel was originally run by London-wide government, but control was handed to Greenwich in the 1980s.

“the same argument applies to the Woolwich tunnel and common sense would dictate that what’s good for Greenwich is also good for Woolwich.” Maureen O’Mara, former Labour councillor.
Caroline Russell, London Assembly, has taken up the cause for both foot tunnels 🙌

A good question but foot tunnel lifts here and in Woolwich have been poorly managed for years and the contract looks dubious. Apart from that, this is a cross Borough link and we think it should be managed by TFL who will have better resources.

It’s glaringly obvious on the map there’s no cross river links east of Tower Bridge. Time to fix and ensure the foot tunnels are fully accessible #FixTheLifts #EastWestDivide @sebdance.bsky.social @london.gov.uk @pedalme.bsky.social @londoncycling.bsky.social

It took the council *five months* to answer a FOI ⬇️. If they knew lift status all along, why not relay to the public instead of keeping us all in the dark?! Six months of shoddy service to tunnel users since April! #GreenwichFootTunnel #FixTheLifts @inclusionlondon.bsky.social

Early morning feedback from residents on their way to work. Lime and Forest bikes obstructing the way. No signage in place like at north end (not everyone has a phone, has the time to check apps). Absolute disregard towards tunnel users. Time for TfL to take over management #FixTheLifts

Greenwich council is fixing the Greenwich foot tunnel's faulty north lift - still no updates on the Woolwich foot tunnel's north lift, which has been broken for over three years.

Lift status Greenwich Foot Tunnel. No posters on the message board to warn people! Not everyone clicks on the QR code to council website which isn’t up to date anyway! North lift has been broken since 28 April! Many people are struggling up the stairs! @royalgreenwich.bsky.social
