Community group for locals. Successfully put pressure on TfL to replace escalators Cutty Sark DLR (May 2026). Now pushing for TfL to manage Greenwich Foot Tunnel. https://www.change.org/p/transfer-greenwich-foot-tunnel-management-to-transport-for-london

Absolutely key that you factor in the Greenwich foot tunnel which is literally right next to the proposed new cycle lanes.
Read our petition and see why it’s crucial. 🙏🏼

The tunnels are cross borough transport infrastructure. Why can’t TfL take responsibility rather than just one borough fighting for funding from another? Can’t they adjust LIP funding to the three boroughs to cover costs? Something must be done!

The Mayor must explain why our Foot Tunnels, which provide cross river cross borough links for walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users & mobility cycles do not qualify to be part of TfL Strategic Network. @sebdance.bsky.social @transportforall.org.uk

The cargo bike boom that could change London’s roads forever
More and more businesses have shifted away from delivery vans and cars to cargo bikes. If it continues, the white van drop-off may become a thing of the past

This is fantastic progress and of course we love peering at civil engineering projects! Thanks, Caroline! And thanks also to TfL!
Hey 👋 anyone who likes peering at civil engineering projects as they get underway.

There's a new and helpful TFL update on the Cutty Sark Station escalators. They seem to have made decent progress in September and October.

Greenwich Foot Tunnel should be a KEY Thames crossing - but with the North Side lift broken for months, disabled people, parents with prams, and cyclists say they're being cut off from jobs, family and everyday life.

It would be good to see serious discussion around improvement for businesses who use cargo bikes here in Greenwich. It’s impossible for them to make cross-river deliveries because the foot tunnel lifts are completely unreliable. @london.gov.uk @sebdance.bsky.social @pedalme.bsky.social

The tunnels were originally governed by the London-wide body, the GLC, and previously by the London County Council.

It is for the government and Parliament to change the law in order to transfer responsibility for the tunnels to TfL/GLA.

Can understand why TfL don’t want them. Overall funding issues for local Councils aside, it’s ridiculous the Councils can’t get their act together jointly to sort them, though.
While this may be ‘unique infrastructure’ it’s not uncommon for highway matters to fall between authorities & need sorting.

Commitments for Woolwich were made for this spring. Shocking excuses about a door that was damaged *three years* ago! We were on site this week and south lift is certainly not working properly! We’ve filed a complaint but ultimately, @london.gov.uk must step in!

Early morning at Woolwich Foot Tunnel today with our petition. *Commuters ’ reminded us it was the third anniversary 🎂 of the closure of the north lift (they asked for a ‘celebration’cake!). Another person cycles from *Bexleyheath’ to *Canary Wharf* via this tunnel.

TfL may not be interested in taking on the foot tunnels but they are critical infrastructure providing a resilient way for people to cross the river east of tower bridge under their own steam. If TfL can build Silvertown Tunnel for people with cars then they can provide lifts for people on foot.

I agree.

The responsibility for the foot tunnels was previously with the Greater London Council (prior to its abolition) and the London County Council.

One way to restore this as a London-wide responsibility (TfL/GLA) would be for the government and Parliament to consider amending the law.

It really shouldn’t take awesome local campaigners like @escalatenow.bsky.social to provide updates on the lifts for people wanting to cross the river east of Tower Bridge on foot or wheeling bikes.

TfL need to pick up the foot tunnels as strategic river crossings and make the lifts reliable.
The drudgery for local residents continues with both lifts broken despite engineers being on site last week and yesterday. They didn’t even bother to update travel info so it’s left to locals to provide live info including Andrea’s initiative greenwichlifts.co.uk. TfL has the clout to change this.

People working in Greenwich have to put up with this drudgery. The workers, also parents taking small children to school, the disabled, the elderly AND our tourists. This is unacceptable @london.gov.uk @sebdance.bsky.social
