As seen on anitwitter since 2009, departed those accursed shores for this new land. Anime, international relations, history, home decor, outdoors, scifi, TTRPGs, Pittsburgh & Western PA, a timeline veering wildly. Too old to blog, too young to die

I know my answer to every problem is "build mecha" but we should build Yeagers to destroy tariffs and trade barriers.

If you're wondering what will grow in horrible soil, survive no rain or watering for over a month at a time, self-seed and has fun flowers: Rose campion, and Verbena bonariensis!

This post brought to you by noticing these two plants still going strong in the hellscape spot in my back yard.
Here's a hot pink rose campion in full bloom. This is a mix of rose campion plants with white flowers, and ones with pale pink flowers. The very tall stems with tufts of purple at the end are verbena bonariensis. In this flowerbed they're echoed by a low growing verbena canadensis 'Homestead Purple'. The bright greenish-yellow flowers are nicotiana langsdorffii. This flowerbed was in my old garden in Portland, Oregon, where I could buy annual species nicotianas at my local nursery. I wish a Pittsburgh nursery would step up and carry these beauties!

Trump take pizza.

Since it's the season I just went to Get Go for one of their Trio of Heresy subs, the Pilgrim turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, and stuffing bread roll. So wrong, so tasty.

I was going to order a gyro pizza from the one shop. They've never been the cheapest pizzeria and a specialty pizza like that could get up to $30 for a large.

Went to order and it was $45 now!

First rises were slow. But if this continues we will soon see our first Double Price Event with months!

In a free edition of the Japan Daily Briefing — I’m starting “free Fridays” — I look more at the causes and effects of Kōmeitō’s break with the LDP and discuss Ishiba’s reflections on the eightieth anniversary of the end of World War II.

It’s true: the cities are lawless and scary, if you live here sell your property as fast as possible, particularly if you have a 2 family row house from the 1920s with those nice bay windows.

This shit is crazy because they're just straight up on video hitting a car that was blocked in the street. The extent as to which DHS now just brazenly puts out lies is utterly obscene.

UPDATE: In emailed statement to me / @reason.com, DHS alleges that WGN-TV producer Debbie Brockman "threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer."
Screencap of email from DHS public affairs: Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin:

“U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations and when several violent agitators used their vehicles to block in agents in an effort to impede and assault federal officers. In fear of public safety and of law enforcement, officers used their service vehicle to strike a suspect’s vehicle and create an opening. As agents were driving, Deborah Brockman, a U.S. citizen, threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of illegal aliens violently resisting arrest and agitators and criminals ramming cars into our law enforcement officers. These attacks highlight the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily—all while receiving no pay thanks to the Democrats’ government shutdown.”

creating a defense tech startup against feral pigs
dogsinautumn.bsky.social
They’re surprisingly resilient. Part of the problem is they just don’t taste as good as you’d think compared to the literal same animal, but raised on a farm. They’re also quite smart & very dangerous to stalk.

It’s basically an intractable problem & likely to get worse as fewer & fewer people hunt

Build mecha to combat the feral hogs, it's the only way.
idaclemens.bsky.social
turns out the absurd part of his post was not that you can have 30-50 feral hogs appear out of nowhere, but indeed the notion that a semi-automatic rifle could possibly be enough to stop them

You can call a close friend 'mate', but when some guy you don't know crashes his car in a harmless & comical way you can also shout 'Can't park there, mate!'

This is like using thou-thee-thy in Middle English.

T-pronouns can insult strangers because they imply the stranger is a social inferior, someone to whom you need pay no respect.

Closest analogue I know (there may be better) in present-day British English is gendered, but: it's like a man calling another man, whom he doesn't know, 'mate'.

Earlier we heard Éowyn use t-pronouns to assert intimacy when talking to Aragorn.

A weird (to L1 present-day English speakers) thing about t-pronouns is that they can be insulting if used to strangers. And the captain of the Nazgûl uses them to address Éowyn.
