Exeter Cycling Campaign - speaking up for everyday cycling to be safe, convenient & connected in and around Exeter.
Our response to the disappointing news that the long-awaited replacement for the Mallison Bridge on the Quay in Exeter has been cancelled.

The current arrangement (alley between Cricklepit Bridge and Commercial Rd) is unsafe and crowded. Up to the council now to provide a solution.

New figures show that in the first month of enforcement (October), 5,183 motorists were issued written warnings and 69 were issued penalty notices for repeat offences after ignoring filter signs at the new Wonford Road Bus Gate.

Bits of Exeter's Green Circle are my everyday cycle links. I've fedback on parts hard to cycle or wheel with a disability.

Maybe you know other sections well & how it could be improved for those using 🧑‍🦽🚲?
Why not complete the survey & get some improvements?

Who agrees that we're suffering from this in Exeter?
Have you heard of “The Populist Playbook?”

A few years ago, I posted what I still consider one of my most important messages.

It was about “The Populist Playbook” that I’ve watched play out often over my 33+ years of city planning.

Since then, it’s only gotten worse.

Do the steps sound familiar?

Always good to understand what other UK cities are doing to combat congestion and pollution and build a thriving city.
Can we learn from Oxford*?

*similarities: large travel to work area, university city, population size, near motorway.
differences: medieval centre, complete ring road.

"Rues aux écoles" sounds so lovely, doesn't it? And by gum, they look amazing too.
Could you imagine these here in Exeter?
Let's hope so.
The Rue Charles Baudelaire in Paris has undergone a major makeover, giving a safe space to children around their school. It is one of over 300 "rues aux écoles" in Paris, showing the success of their green city project.

Can we talk about survivorship bias?

What might those whose lives were cut short by #pollution or crashes from 🚙🚘🚛 say if they were here to be heard?

Study after study, data proves again and again that bike infrastructure saves lives.
Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

It's true to say that to cycle is to be invested in #roadsafety.
That to be invested in road safety is to be concerned about drivers who kill & their sentencing.
We long for change.
I spent the summer engrossed in media reports on sentencing for causing death offences. Yesterday I was given the opportunity to present my findings at the Houses of Parliament.

I hope that my report is helpful to those interested in the law relating to road death:

It's ironic that brighter car head lights may be making cycling less safe. Rather than being able to see road features & cyclists, drivers are blinded.

👀 🌕🌕

This can render some roads completely unsafe for cycling. Unfair!

Our Chair and others attended the Exeter Highways Committee today to represent the views of the Campaign.

A big thanks to the Committee, who voted to keep Dryden Road safe and to explore making local streets even safer, and to all of you who contacted Councillors. It makes a huge difference.

Cheaper car insurance in particular is great with so many folks struggling

If you'd like to benefit, do let your councillors know 📃📤
Let's talk 20.

There is fantastic evidence coming out of Wales after 2 years of 20mph - reduced demand on the NHS, reduction in injuries, deaths, even reduced car insurance premiums now as fewer small vehicle damage claims are being made.
