My dream... my neighbour's children can go from our street to anywhere in Exeter without having to use a car just to be safe. Is that so radical?

I've just done this. I was working nearby for the NHS when Maria was killed here. It's so important to make this gateway suitable for all ages and abilities.

In Wales, Cornwall, Edinburgh, London and so many places when most 30mph roads were changed to 20mph, people injured or killed by motor vehicles reduced by 20%+. With minimal change to journey times and £2bn saving in insurance costs it's a huge win. bit.ly/4gIBPlJ

And even more miles if you power ebikes

Over 40% of corn grown in Indiana is used to make ethanol that cars burn. One acre of corn yields about 16,500 vehicle-miles per year of ethanol, which sounds high until you realize that one acre of solar yields about 2,700,000 vehicle-miles per year: 16,000% more driving for a given plot of land.

Before (2012) / After (2025) Rue le Vau, Paris 20. The change here is so radical that perceiving the photos as aligned is difficult (see the orange building and the trees on the left). In 2024, this section was converted into a school street with a bike lane running through the greenery.

Try FDBE? First DataBank. Good luck.

Exeter could have this around every school. Why not at least outside Ladysmith and St Michaels? And the Cathedral School? Nearly one year since focus groups held to find solutions following the LTN removal.

How crazy is this? The Kia Oval is a large cricket stadium in London. How large? Try 27,500 seats! And now about half of the perimeter of space surrounding the stadium feature two schools streets at Henry Fawcett Primary School and St. Mark's C of E Primary School.

The Welsh 20mph default reduced casualties by 25% and insurance costs by £90m. If done in England expect reductions of 15,000 casualties pa and insurance by £2bn pa. Implementation cost would be approx £0.5bn. For comparison, 1st yr depreciation on new cars registered in England in 2024 was £78bn

You know cycling should be safe on regular occasions like „existing” and „getting groceries” and not having to change continents just to not get ran over.

The language!
Not 'our failure to meet those vital targets' but 'failed targets'
I weep.
I am grieving for the next generation.

'Badenoch said: “Under my leadership we will scrap those failed targets. Our priority now is growth, cheaper energy, and protecting the natural landscapes we all love.”'

Remember this email well:
"There is no shortage of PPE. PPE is to be kept in a locked cupboard, matron will hold the key at all times".

When I watched with pity at the very beginning, those nurses in Wuhan; little did I think that a few weeks later I'd be envying their spacesuit PPE.

I may have found my defining quote.

Pair this with my pinned post and you will see what I mean!
From a poster called “just shower thoughts“ reading: when people talk about traveling to the past, they worry about radically, changing the present by doing something small, barely anyone in the present to really thinks that they can radically change the future by doing something small.

900 bike hangars and yet Exeter has zero.
Why are we waiting?

Another 40 new bike hangers coming to Waltham Forest - bringing the total to over 900 serving 5,400+ residents.

In Devon & Cornwall, VisionZeroSW are 4yrs into 10yr plan to ⬇️ road deaths by 50%. Nearly all the effort is going on police enforcement, nil on infra (we only had some a Look for Cyclists signs on proven dangerous roundabouts).
Result? Road deaths increasing.
Depressing.
Graph showing (road) deaths per year vs target deaths.

2020 was 44 (baseline)
Planned by 2030 is 22
2024 actual was 56
On plan target for 2024 should've been 36

I wish I could find it again, but I once read about a legal judgement from "the olden days 🙄" C19? that "the highway is not a stable" ie you'd no right to keep your horse & carriage on the street if you couldn't afford stabling.
Wish we'd learned to stick with that...
loveexeter.bsky.social
That explains it. Cowardly.

I'm not sure. I watched part of the debate online (as they were covering 20mph motion) but I found the subsequent minutes hard to follow.

Puts the uproar about Angela Rayner’s troubles into perspective.

No, I don’t think what she did was good.

But this is on another level.

There seems to be some *confusion*
among Reform supporters over Nathan Gill being one of them

“But, but, Reform didn’t exist when he took his Russian bribes”

“But, but he was in UKIP”

“But, but it has nothing to do with Farage, he barely knew the guy”

So here’s a little history lesson 👍🏼🧵

Bad idea!

The ability to request judicial review is a vital safeguard against the govt making bad decisions and ignoring environmental rules & agreements.

Without the Aarhus Convention, @wealdactiongroup.bsky.social and I would not have been able to bring our case on oil production at Horse Hill

📢FOI in the News!

The government is considering leaving the Aarhus Convention, which allows groups to judicially review environmentally damaging proposals without massive costs if they lose.

Or worse, people will self select aspirin or an otc NSAID during pregnancy and end up in real trouble.
I'm hoping the acetaminophen name will deflect some of the misinformation. 🤞

Praying isn't begging God to give us things but aligning our hearts with His.
"Who can I show love to?
Help me to be generous even when it hurts.
Help me to grow a forgiving, not vengeful heart.
Who, unseen, is feeling lonely and needs a kind word?"

It's about changing our hearts, not His.
