The real discovery problem of gaming is finding people who want to cover video games.

I mean, outside of twitch / YT obviously, where people do play the stuff they care about and somehow don't need to make it all about Ubisoft to survive. Weird how audiences seem to adapt to the offer huh?

When I was games press back in 2008 - 2015, no-one *ever* talked to me about "we need to report on stuff that is going to make us money"

It was just never a thing. I reported on whatever games I damn well liked, and I helped make so many small games pop off -- so so many

Where is that now?

We've been around for ages now, and we have means for getting our games out there into the word without the press

But new teams, teams smaller than ours, teams without the means -- are they just fucked?

Is this really the state of the games press now -- if it ain't AAA, go fuck yourself?

It's 48 hours since Little Rocket Lab launched, we've been top of New and Trending for the entire time, 94% rating on Steam, huge player numbers, big numbers on Game Pass, tons of streams and YT videos...

and we've still received next to no press at all

The press for smaller games is just dead.

this is good! this is exactly what you'd want to see out of this. the full post has more details, but this snippet covers the policy change.
[a quote from the linked post, with custom styling to make the text brighter, and to make bold and italicized text stand out; emphasis is not included in the following alt text]

Hate speech does not belong on RetroAchievements.
Even when disguised as a joke, it normalises real-world hate and harms our community. There is a difference between juvenile humor and outright hate speech. What Pokémon Clover calls humor is hate speech. RetroAchievements will not legitimize bigotry by hosting an achievement set for it.

Content Policy for Achievement Sets
RetroAchievements will no longer approve achievement sets for games that contain:
* Illegal content. Content that is illegal to own or distribute in major jurisdictions.
* Glorified hate speech. Content that intentionally targets individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics.
* Sexual exploitation. Glorification of sexual assault, non-consensual acts, or child sexual abuse material.
* Extreme or abhorrent content. Content that violates community standards in a way that undermines RetroAchievements’ values.

Games that have been rated by official ratings boards (ESRB, PEGI, or similar organizations) are considered acceptable, as these games have undergone professional content review. The only exception is if a game contains content that is illegal to own or distribute, regardless of its rating status.

Hacks, homebrew, and unlicensed games do not undergo ratings board review and will receive additional scrutiny to ensure compliance with this new policy.

This policy provides guidance, but is not exhaustive. The RA team reserves the right to evaluate games on a case-by-case basis and make determinations in the best interest of maintaining a safe, legal, welcoming, and inclusive community.

I just don't know how far they need to go for people to stop supporting them. I shouldn't say this because that's way too good of an idea for them, but I'm sure if the next Division game had you playing an ICE agent, it'd still generate tons of coverage and sell better than the first 2 games.

"I'm making an piece of shit richer by buying a game I've played a dozen times already, even if it openly doesn't respect me, sitting comfortably in the nazi bar because there are nice pictures and clearing checkmarks on a map is a good way to waste time" - somehow, most people who play games
fachewachewa.itch.io
Ubisoft and Yves just shouldn't matter, they belong in court just like the assholes that got fined a fraction of their salary. They should be nothing more than the butt of some easy jokes.
The fact that influencers still treat their games with respect should be enough to make us ashamed of games.
fachewachewa.itch.io
Either you want games to be interesting / important / art / whatever, or you're absolutely fine encouraging this for the sake of a sense of escapism you could get literally anywhere else.
Nothing against the devs, except that they should know better and do anything else than giving Yves more value.
fachewachewa.itch.io
It's just a waste of time to be mad at Ubisoft nowadays, they've been this way for longer than you played AC. It was fun when they ruined a cool promise by making AC2 a boring formulaic open world, or when they said they couldn't animate women, but being mad at them now is just ignorance.

Due to a new bill signed by NC Governor Josh Stein (a Democrat), the moratorium on our state's death penalties has been ended and may now proceed via *any* method. Welcome back, barbarity.

In the book, my essay “The False Evolution of Execution Methods” will be accompanied by a new essay by Lyle May. May interrogates capital punishment from his singular perspective; he has been incarcerated on North Carolina’s death row for over twenty years.

I'd say I hope they wasted millions on this, but a lot of that is probably public Canadian and French money (and whatever dozens of other countries they're established in)

I can't believe the company that said "wait please don't leave, you don't have to play with the black character if you think he shouldn't exist" and wasn't punished for it is now* making decisions based on what racists are complaining about!!!!

*they've been doing it for more than a decade

You would not believe how many stories like this have been popping up over the last ~5 years

Not just full games cancelled—entire characters and plot lines removed or changed, leaving less time for making the *rest of the game better*, to try avoiding a small and malicious contingent of voices.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

🦇 I've only played a little bit so far, but having a blast with this. A little tricky to get a handle on at first but the sense of adventure is great and there seems to be a lot of depth hiding behind simple controls. Check it out! 🦇

And obviously since then coverage has gone even further into hell, only talking about stuff people already know about, and then wondering why their audience keep shrinking. So yeah, again, it's nice to have people willing to take a chance and invest into coverage that matters.
fachewachewa.itch.io
I remember people saying MewGenics would never happen even after Ed had announced they'd go back to it and Tyler was posting about the different prototypes. Obviously people can't follow every dev, but it's wild that even such major indie personalities could completely go under the radar.
fachewachewa.itch.io
Another great example of the kind of coverage that's possible it you actually talk to devs, even if playing 30h over months is obviously not something you can do for every game.
I've been following both Ed and Tyler forever so not much here is new for me but that's also stuff that was never covered.

But english speaking outlets probably make more than half of the jury. Can't check because they changed the website again, and idk where the jury list is.
But anyways it was public in the past, never really covered but it made it clear how silly of a popularity contest it was.
fachewachewa.itch.io
It's not. The only thing deciding nominations is if the jury (journalists) include the game in their list.
It's how you get Sifu as a fighting game, Dave the Diver as an indie, or Among Us as a 2020 nominee even though it's a 2018 game.

In Blue Prince's case, no loc just means less coverage
fachewachewa.itch.io
Basically nomination in big categories for *relatively* small games can matter, because that's just a big visibility boost. It worked with Balatro, if BP was a GOTY nom it probably would?
But also the fact that any game could be considered there means they're probably way past "being in trouble"??
fachewachewa.itch.io
Everyone's fine spoiling Baby Steps as much as they can because they rushed to the ending, but as soon as you search for the ice cream truck ride there's no one left. I see how it is.
