Making games no one asked for

"an absolute no-no" okay I thought I was using hyperbole in discussing how people talk about this stuff but fuck me. Every time an intentionally disturbing creative decision raises controversy, it's like "wuh oh. :/ I guess they didn't realize how this looks to Normal People. Whoopsie-doodle."
i know you’re not supposed to read the conversation in the comments but the conversation is depressing and anti-art in all the typical ways to justify censorship… like there’s so much to unpack here especially with how quickly people paint art as “abuse” when it discusses difficult topics.

Partway through but this is fun.

10+ years ago I did something similar with Assassin's Creed, but that was even more obvious since copy pasted games resulted in copy pasted reviews.

Reminder to not assume that what you're reading is true.
Doing tabloid stuff, stirring shit up to make people mad, is somehow still the norm for video games, and having creators say you basically made shit up is a rite of passage instead of a shameful breach of trust.

This is hurting everyone.
Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada says he’s "quite interested" in Capcom’s decision to charge fans to stream upcoming Street Fighter 6 tournament finals.

"A lot of influencers are making big money off of their streams," Harada said.

Idk why anyone thinks Tim Epic is wrong about AI, have you seen what AAA studios are doing? Every day there's a new drama about people finding AI art and the studios going "but it's all unintentional!!!" (Which is a lie but also that would be worse)

As for Epic... Have you seen UE5 games at all???

I don't think people should use the term indie, but they do.
I don't think we shouldn't care about TGA because it's literally games media.
What TGA's jury calls indie matters because it's what games journalists think is indie.

Nowadays, guilt is almost the only way to get them to talk about indies.

It's wild to me that people struggle to resist buying games funding transphobes or made by companies that are actively trying to appeal to racists, while I'm perfectly fine not buying Dispatch even though I was excited for it just because AdHoc isn't refusing their indie debut nomination

I'll echo Hayes: if you're into this particular brand of visual novel, Detective Instinct is great! Finished it this morning and was really pleased with how it concluded. Worth it for the soundtrack alone, total Chill Gaming Music While You Work fodder.

It feels completely insane to learn about Childish Gambino's stroke at 42, and then see articles like this that don't even *mention* the possible link to covid -- a disease which significantly increases the chance of strokes (to the tune of 2x or more). :/

Kinda crazy that AdHoc and Sandfall still haven't withdrawn from the indie / debut categories from various awards.

Even crazier to hear very influential people defend their inclusion because it started without a publisher or whatever, and then "if publishers are important then Larian is indie"

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.

I don't want to hear about the way gamers harassing devs are getting them fired the same way they did 10 years ago.

What I want is to stop hearing about the companies doing the firing (and more generally accepting their audience of bigots) and their games.
