A reminder that cars aren’t a technology problem. They’re a geometry problem.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

Why do like 85% of trucks on the highway have pedestrian deflectors but < 20% in #Philly have them? Is it certain state laws? #VisionZero #PedestrianSafety #BikeSafety #BikeCommuter @familiesforsafestreets.org @bikeaction.org @bcgp.bsky.social @councilmemberjg.bsky.social

Amazing how the media removes the PERSON WHO DID THE HITTING from the sentence. The vehicle managed to kill a pedestrian and drive away all by itself. So sad for this family. #VisionZero #philly #traffic deaths

NEW: Sean Duffy frequently calls safety his “top priority” as transportation secretary. But I spent months wading through regulatory notices and found something far different: that USDOT has been delaying, weakening and killing dozens of safety rules, many opposed by the transportation industry.🧵

Many folks in the advocacy community know that efforts to lower driving speeds save lives...so in most places we're left to grapple with this reality where we know that most people and institutions choose to accept a certain amount of preventable human suffering as unavoidable collateral damage.
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

Cargo biking, 99 years ago. Came across this in a photo archive, unfortunately with no info on who or where, just the year, 1926. But it made me think of @lauragmitchell.com and her lovely feed of her commutes to school and around town with her children.

If not for a low bumper, I might be dead. When I was hit, the bumper mainly contacted my foot and leg, rolling me up onto the hood before the ground. While the landing tore my shoulder up, it saved me from a full body impact #cyclist #VisionZero #BigTrucksSuck

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople

In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it?

If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say?

Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

Why people are dying:
-Speeding isn't well regulated
-People are driving impaired/distracted
-Vehicle size is dangerously bloated
-Roads are designed poorly
-Legal system has failed vulnerable road users
-Establishment tries to shift blame to victims

63 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

The Stop Trashing Our Air Act would prohibit the City from contracting with companies that profit by turning our trash into pollution and sickness.

Let's do what's right for our health, our neighbors in Chester, and our planet and stop trashing our air!
