Yesterday I learned that a kid I coached on a few youth soccer teams died of heart failure a couple months into his freshman year of college. He was 18. I have trouble processing how you could be a parent and cope with that kind of a loss without imploding.

If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

Yesterday on my way to the gym I hit 500 miles on my ebike. Before I got it, I basically never biked, so almost all of those trips would have been by car. It was ~40 degrees out and I was on my way to swim when I hit 500 miles. Absolutely life changing.

It’s crazy to think about the crimes we’re going to learn about after this regime ends.

We’re already hearing about Watergate level crimes every week. Imagine what will come out after it’s over.

We’re going to need a full accounting of all that’s been done in violation of the constitution.

LOL I actually agree with this but in my experience if I've stated something like this my mentions are all angry replies from people I consider allies saying this is an immutably bad idea that will 100% hurt cities.
This needs to be the norm everywhere:

I am historically a "dog person" but have really enjoyed living with cats for the past 10 years. Last night, one of our cats brought an injured finch into the dining room and I'll admit it's still disorienting to know that I'm sharing a home with a couple of serial killers.

If you care about road violence, policing, and media coverage of fatal bike crashes, this case—where attorneys for Flint PD are blaming a (drunk) rider for his own death despite obvious police negligence—is super interesting. www.mlive.com/news/flint/2...
Cyclist BAC was nearly three times limit when hit by Flint police cruiser
An attorney for the city of Flint pushed back on claims that a police officer’s negligence caused an accident that left a bicyclist with a traumatic brain injury during opening arguments in a Genesee ...

Many folks in the advocacy community know that efforts to lower driving speeds save lives...so in most places we're left to grapple with this reality where we know that most people and institutions choose to accept a certain amount of preventable human suffering as unavoidable collateral damage.
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

Most folks have the good sense that if they see a piece of dogshit on the ground, they don't get down on their hands and knees to smell it. And yet if they see the New York Times runs a fawning profile of Olivia Nuzzi, they lose their minds, settle into the couch and inhale the putrid feculence.

I think whomever realized that this could be a Christmas ornament (and figured out the funding, tooling and logistics) deserves free drinks for life in Los Angeles county.

We’ve had an uptick of coyote attacks in our neighborhood so we’re keeping the cats inside after dark. My pal Feta is annoyed by the new policy and was grumpy for a few hours last night.

The new batch of Epstein emails makes me ponder the folks deeply outraged by trans people who want to do sports because they think it harms women. Decades of hard proof that cis men who abuse their power to harm women in the worst ways are the actual threat can alter this counterfactual obsession.

Rewatching earlier seasons of Stranger Things to prep for season 5. Forgot how beautiful it is. I love how all the young characters are such well developed and acted. Plus, shitloads of awesome bike moments.

Just as the graft and lawlessness and weaponized bigotry need to face consequences, the repeated capitulation and silence needs to have consequences, too.

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

The carnage caused by FAA cutbacks cast a spotlight on the massive public subsidies required to have air travel function in the US. People think spending money on bike lanes and rail is socialism while TRILLIONS have been spent to prop up the airline industry and to build and maintain roadways.
