Attack Vector: Tactical, Squadron Strike, and Birds of Prey are all master classes in crunchy simulation design. And the PNPs are all discounted at Wargame Vault to around $10. Worth it just to read the rules even if you never play!

Architect of Worlds is also worth checking out - great stuff.

You might not know this, but I wrote two novels that make great Xmas gifts. The first, The Honours, is set in 1935 in a country house in Norfolk. It has secret passages & mysteries & a 13-year-old protagonist called Delphine. I would describe it as 'weird gothic'.
