More essential reading from Will Bunch: It's getting harder to shock America, but Trump managed this weekend with a crude, fiery threat to wage war on Chicago. But a massive street protest Saturday, backed by a strong governor, shows Chicago isn't having it. Did Trump pick the wrong fight?

Alright, so I've been afraid to say this out loud, but I think after today, I can say it: In the first Battle of Los Angeles, the good people of LA County have prevailed. We beat ICE back. 1/

The Guardian joins The New Republic in covering the (racist) illegal brutalization of US labor hero Chris Smalls, but the story continues to go unreported by all other mainstream outlets.

“Chris Smalls is still in Givon Prison and despite repeated requests to meet with the U.S. Embassy has been ignored by his country after being abducted by the IOF in international waters.”

UC-AFT joins the call for the immediate release of Professor Jonathan Caravello, who was beaten and abducted by ICE on Thursday at a raid in Ventura County. @cfaunited.bsky.social
A graphic with a bold orange border and a white background features the logo of UC-AFT Local 1474, which includes a blue outline of the state of California with a flame inside and the words “UC-AFT LOCAL 1474.” To the right, bold blue text reads: “UC-AFT Joins CFA in demanding the release of Prof. Jonathan Caravello.” Below, the body text states that UC-AFT calls for the immediate release of Professor Jonathan Caravello, who was reportedly beaten and abducted by ICE during a Thursday raid in Ventura County. The union expresses solidarity with immigrant colleagues, students, and neighbors, and joins the California Faculty Association in urging elected officials—including Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, Representatives Salud Carbajal and Julia Brownley, and State Senator Monique Limón—to take action and demand accountability for what are described as “kidnappings in broad daylight.” The statement ends with a call for ICE, DHS, and CBP to stop invading communities.

The past 7 months have involved constant deep breathing for me. It's really really hard to see people rediscovering that jails and prisons in the U.S. are torture chambers and that U.S. policing cannot be reformed.

Our hearts are heavy for the grieving family of Jaime Alanis, who died from injuries sustained during a chaotic raid on Thursday.

We will do everything we can to support them. We continue to work with the hundreds of farm worker families navigating the aftermath of this violent raid.

This bill was never only about eviscerating social services or enriching oligarchs, bad as that is. It’s also about using state power to build a private police force for the fascists—and spreading fear and destroying solidarity. Being brave and building solidarity is a big part of how we fight back.

The debt, deportation, and death bill has passed. Congress further decimates care work to fund violence work.

Vital services eviscerated and ICE becomes the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency ever known. It hasn’t been sold this way, but it’s a massive public jobs program for fascists.
