Eliminating their competition so they don't have to be good at anything else
It remains entirely unclear to me what this company is "good at."

I don't know if it's because I'm jaded on Kyle Tucker or because the Cubs have (FINALLY) entered the deferral game, but the Tucker to LAD thing just doesn't bother me.

Okay so they'll win 107 games instead of 105. Big whoop.

Cubs fans adore him. Nobody (with a brain) wants to trade him. It's all lustful fans of other orgs making up fake trades.
Hey Cubs fans, what did Nico Hoerner do to you to hate him so much?

🤷‍♂️

More great stuff here from Shōta.

My favorite? #10, especially when you realize who Shōta was teammates with in Japan...
This is a short summary of today’s Shōta podcast. It was really interesting again today. I’m sorry if I can’t fully share how fun it was, because my English skills are limited and some things are easier to express in Japanese. @Cubs #BeHereForIt #FlyTheW #今永SHOTAISM

I still get the sense that the Cubs' preferred path this off-season is signing Alex Bregman and trading for a SP (Cabrera? Gore?).

Whether or not they can pull it off, we'll see, but wonder if we start to see movement post-Winter Meetings.

Swing pitchers are underrated. Yes, get more of them, thx
More from Jed Hoyer, Including the Cubs’ Interest in Multiple Pitchers Who Can Make Starts
Cubs President Jed Hoyer spoke with the media from the Winter Meetings, some of which we discussed last night. Some of the media session is available via Marquee, and I’ll embed it here so you can watch for yourself: As I said, I got into a lot of the meat last night, but there was one snippet at The Athletic that I thought deserved a call out today: “We’re definitely looking for another starter,” said Hoyer, who also sounded open to adding another swingman to go between the bullpen and the rotation. “Could we add multiple guys that can make starts? Yes.” So, we knew the Cubs were looking to add another starting pitcher. And we knew the Cubs were going to be adding to the bullpen. But Hoyer reminds us that there’s a third option that the Cubs might be exploring: swing guys. Last year, later in the offseason, the Cubs wound up inking one of the best swing-pitcher deals when they got Colin Rea. And, given Craig Counsell’s proclivity for using pitchers as “out-getters” who can pitch in a variety of situations, it would make sense that the Cubs may want to add to the current group of those swing types (Rea, Ben Brown, Javier Assad, Jordan Wicks). Among those guys on the market right now are a couple we’ve discussed before in Sean Newcomb and Dustin May, with the latter also being kind of a reclamation type. I wonder if Walker Buehler finds himself also having to be open to that kind of role. There are also guys like Nick Martinez, Aaron Civale, Andrew Heaney, Kona Takahashi, and many more reclamation or fringe-starter arms who may succeed as swing men. Even old friend Brad Keller is being viewed by some teams as not just a reliever or not just a starter, but a guy who could wind up doing both for them. All of that is to say, assuming the Cubs add at least one starting pitcher who is more of a clear front-half-of-the-rotation type, why wouldn’t we be curious about seeing them explore the fringy starter/swing-man market? I like it. We’ve seen how valuable those guys can be, and we’ve also seen how many of them can surprise you out of the bullpen. Just keep it in mind going forward.

I LOVE Ryne Stanek as a supplemental add. I HATE Ryne Stanek as the last big league deal for a reliever.

Wait not one, but TWO people have already voted for Ryan Braun?!?!?
Ballot #12 is from David Jablonski. Braun, Buehrle (+2), and Félix (+3) join seven holdovers, with no drops. In his first year, Ryan Braun’s at 16.7% of the first 12 ballots.

BRING ME THE PIE SLICE
This is a good dive into something we've been talking about for a while and which many people refuse to admit:

fielders are too good, low BA is not just hitters wanting launch angle or whatever

More hits? Make it harder on fielders.

Rogers in front of the Cubs infield would be fun. Need to pair him with more velo elsewhere, though.

The LAST thing to pay for on a big league roster IMO is LH relief. Cubs absolutely destroyed that market last year by getting Caleb Thielbar and Drew Pomeranz for less than $4M combined.

Three guys I love this off-season to try to repeat that success?

Cam Booser. Sam Hentges. José Quijada.

Obsessing over signing a
half-dozen shitty relievers
The Cubs now have 30 guys on their 40-man roster. For those battling the math, that’s 10 fewer than the maximum. Even after non-tender day, eight teams are at 40 and no one else is at less than 32 (Phillies). Active offseason ahead.

Cubs tried to get Frasso at the 2022 deadline. Wonder if they’ll try to grab him now.
Dodgers will also non-tender RHP Nick Frasso, source tells The Athletic. Ended last season on the 60-day IL.

Could see Song as a fit if Cubs are looking for a utility/bench+ guy to split time with Shaw but aren't looking to dump Okamoto-level resources into the offense.

Worry the pull-heavy power approach from a lefty won't play at Wrigley, though. Decent option. Wouldn't be top priority. Go get Okamoto.

We see two surprise NL Central non-tenders today. Andrew Vaughn and Brady Singer.

Refsnyder is good. I'd prefer Austin Hays if the Cubs are looking at that role.

It's probable that King was the most likely of the middle and upper tier of FA starters all along, but with Shōta definitely accepting the QO King absolutely makes the most sense for the Cubs, IMO.

Still think they might prefer to go the trade route, but I think they'll be in heavy on King.
November 19, 2025 at 8:59 PM
While I like some of the more traditional buy low types DFA'ed today for the Cubs (Colin Holderman, Dauri Moreta, Jason Foley), the name that really stands out to me is Tyler Mattison.

Big time cut-ride fastball at 94mph. 30% whiff on the pitch. Funky release. Only 26 years old w/ options.
November 19, 2025 at 3:20 AM
Ultimately there's 3 key things on this decision.

1) Shōta at 1/$22M is fine. Solid deal. Not going to hurt you.
2) Don't love how this potentially narrows the path to improve in the rotation.
3) Big ? now is budget. Hoping even offering the QO is Jed telling us it's healthy.
