The missing/replaced music on the Peacock stream of Homicide: Life on the Street is so awful. OMG. 😢

If you don’t know what sort of music was integrated into many episodes, check out this Spotify playlist someone put together.

I rented this movie as a teenager knowing nothing about it and I still sometimes think about it. So weird and unsettling.
On this day in Canadian Horror History, PIN premiered in Montréal in 1988.

"When Prophecy Fails" is gripping, an in-depth social study that has served as a key basis for the psychological concept of cognitive dissonance.

But a new study that examines the unsealed papers of one of the book's authors claims that Prophecy leans on lies and serious manipulation.
It’s one of the most influential social psychology studies ever. Was it all a lie?
A classic book on UFO believers and their "cognitive dissonance" after aliens failed to land is called into question.

The Night Ship is fishing up some happy netgalley reviews. Someone called it fun, and Publisher's Weekly called it an "unsettling and immersive sci-fi thriller", and that is everything I wanted.

It's still on the 'galley, but if that's not your jam let me know!

The whole horror is incompatible with (Gothic) romance this makes me want to yell about Sensation literature, which I did yesterday, next to my mom, who eventually just smiled and bore it

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

I finished reading this recently. A tale of obsession & creepiness. The majority of the characters are deeply odd/repulsive, it veers a little too closely to Dark Matter but never quite hits (a high benchmark though). Apparently Michelle Paver had a block so she’s done well to produce this. So so.

important to realize just how seriously feelings of powerlessness in the face of vast structures & a learned understanding of the futility of individual effort are generational givens that anybody my age or older (work hard! succeed! things work out!) has no way to fully grasp—but we need to try
Young people feel like we've lost agency over our lives. We can't *really* pick where to live, or whether to change jobs, or how many kids to have -- the cost of living makes us feel trapped.
