Kicking off @piratereadingclub.bsky.social’s Winter Bingo with a book with a green cover: Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan.

My contemporary Irish lit knowledge is lacking & I recently saw an interview in which Cillian Murphy lists some essential authors to read, including Claire Keegan.

I’m looking for books to check off my bingo square for published the same year I was born (1987). While both Beloved and And the Band Played On are on my tbr, I’m not sure either is a good idea for me right now. Anyone have suggestions? Bonus points for under-appreciated gems and/or queer books.

I'm not going to ask if you're doomscrolling. Everything is hard right now. But you still need to eat some food, drink a glass of water, as well as time to rest and recover.

Try not to stay up too late tonight. Sleep deprivation will make everything you need to do harder, including helping others.

I don’t want to hear anything from an elected official unless it’s a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.

I think a lot of us get hope wrong. Hope, I do not believe, is an emotion. In fact, hope makes space for lots of emotions to exist alongside it. You can DO hope scared, angry, sad etc...

Hope doesn't find us. We make hope through action and struggle. It's a practice of living and is re-made daily.

To put an even sharper point on it...

The moral call is to BEAR witness, not to consumption.

In other words: to testimony, not passively offering eyeballs to horrific content.
I say this with love: no.

Every person who doubts the atrocity should witness, so they understand.

There is no need to watch if you read a description of the atrocity, register its moral significance, and commit yourself to speaking out against these horrors.
- Every American needs to witness this atrocity as part of their civil duty — America needs to understand where we are, what our current government is and where we will most likely end up unless We The People act accordingly…

they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

People get their news via social media these days. Newspapers always have a comics section, because if there's not something good to look forward to, people stop showing up to learn about the bad. So post your art &don't feel bad about it. We're the cheese wrapped around these hard to swallow pills.

Once again: Focusing on their lack of training is a mistake. With "better training," their violence would simply cost more, and they would still kill whoever they wanted, but make it look more professional — to make people more comfortable, the way many of you are at ease with local police violence.

Also.

As someone who's gone through trauma-counselling: play Tetris or similar for twenty minutes. Do the 5 senses grounding technique: 1 thing you can touch, two things you can smell etc.
If you’re struggling, I’m copy pasting what a trauma therapist friend suggested here:

“Highly recommend dunking your face in a bowl of cold water, drinking some water to help your body flush the adrenaline and finding something to smell or touch for grounding and avoiding dissociation”

We know what is happening at this point.

You can listen to people you trust who have watched, and amplify their narrative descriptions.

There is no need to traumatize yourself, and frankly I think there is a spiritual danger in habituating yourself to this violence.

This part, especially: “I don't need to see it to fight it.”
I wish I hadn't watched that video. I never watched the killing of Renee Good and hope I never have to. I don't need to see it to fight it.

Today at least four federal agents were beating a man and then one of them (I think) shot him point blank while he was on the ground. More agents present.

Whether you are used to snow or not, it's worth remembering:

wear layers
plug space heaters directly into the wall socket, never a power strip
do not use your generator inside or close to a window
when shoveling, go slow, take deep snow away in small layers, take a lot of breaks
