I usually include examples with my offer of a drink, so there it’s clear there are alcoholic & nonalcoholic options, and always have fancy sparkling water or mocktails to offer guests who don’t drink.

Bonus: it’s also nice for guests who don’t drink very much.
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

I don’t think where I saw this info was Malwarebytes, so an extra important FYI for anyone who saw recent posts about gmail’s AI/smart features with email.
If you have been sharing that Malwarebytes article on the Gmail thing, you should note the giant correction up top.

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

The worst part of getting older is witnessing the moral panic you saw play out like a decade before return in a flimsy new disguise, like a Scooby-Doo villain attempting to commit insurance fraud

Re last repost: it was only like 15 years ago that people were freaking out about a reliance on smartphones making us dumber because we could look stuff up. That still required information literacy skills like knowing how to effectively search for information and evaluating a source’s credibility.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

The best way I can describe the experience of ADHD:

During lockdown in 2020, remember how difficult it was to focus on anything, despite having plenty of tasks you wanted to do, & the perpetual restlessness? That’s what it’s like in my brain.

Doesn’t vanish with meds; meds muffle it.

I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.
