Here's some free marketing tips for artists that i learned as a marketing trainee/social media manager. Trying to consolidate my learnings so it's as accessible, but a polished guide takes a lot of time and people's circumstances vary wildly, so take what resonates. Wishing all artists love and 💶
(Digital marketing tips that emphasize finding the platform with your ideal audience.) Yes, it feels gross advertising your work, but artists deserve to get paid for what they contribute to society. If you want to positively change the culture that treats artists poorly, you have to take actions that make governments and corporations take notice. Obviously, big social/internet platforms are incredibly key to changing that culture right now. If you want sales, build on platforms and marketplaces that allow you to reach people with their wallets already out and ready (like steam, itch.io, redbubble and etsy), and these should be linked to from your main posting platform. Make it as effortless as possible for customers to purchase/subscribe in as few clicks as possible. Practice copywriting clear descriptions that emphasize the benefits to your ideal potential customers and include a call to action ("buy now" is an overused example, but it works and you should definitely make it tailored to your personality.) Also, these huge social media platforms have algorithms that actually do suppress you if they think you're posting spammy content, such as art with little engagement despite all the right keywords. A good workaround is a scroll-stopping image or reel that holds the viewer's attention for more than a few seconds. For example, show something shockingly silly for a half second that forces people to rewatch and pause and read comments while they register what the heck they just witnessed. But really, go where your people are--the people who love to chat about your stuff. Give them something to chat about. They want to connect with real people, they want stories, and usually, they want a good feeling. Be real. AI can't replicate that. Keywords should drive engagement, not exist for the sake of praying the algorithm gods are listening. Often, you'll instinctively be posting stuff people connect with because that's the power of art. But, if you're also trying to make a living, there are many different ways to plug in popular or relevant keywords into your posts so search engines can find you. (Meta titles, descriptions, captions, alt text, comments, profile/bio, etc.) What is your audience looking for? What benefit (not feature) are you trying to give them and yourself? If you can't get in people's shoes, it's a lot more difficult to connect with them. Marketing isn't about big business, it's about connection and solving someone else's problem. Who is looking for you? What do they want and why? It's a lot to think about. This is why governments and companies have spent trillions on marketing. But you can actually solve problems and connect with great people and build great communities by marketing yourself to the people you want to surround yourself with. You market yourself every day, with every choice you make, and you can make each choice count. Even if you struggle connecting with others, that's a problem your art can solve if you're being genuine and making what you love, whether people think it's marketable or not. It's best to view your efforts as connection rather than the incredibly complex and controversial concept of "marketing." Actual marketing practice: Keep a little spreadsheet of hashtags and searches people type in and update it as needed. This is a valuable resource to copy/paste from when building titles, ads, and other forms of copywriting. Driving engagement in comments helps yourself and other artists get noticed by most algorithms because platforms want to show people the big trending posts. It keeps people sticking on the platform longer so they can throw more ads at you. Companies and grifters spend big money on fake followers and engagement to manipulate you into thinking they have value, but your art naturally has lots of engagement value. (Also, algorithms are able to spot fake followers and suspicious engagement, so don't do that.) Try starting a conversation with a genuine, clever question, for example, or state something people resonate with. (I'm sure everyone has witnessed a youtuber say "leave your questions in the comments below" or something along those lines.) When you create a content pillar, it's going to be toward a goal. You want buyers? Make sure you make a promo post with an easy link to click every now and then. Also, pay attention to the vibe you're putting into your work. If you're constantly complaining, which you totally have a right to do, it unfortunately does affect how search engines and potential sponsors see you. If people aren't invested in you as a person, your negativity can taint the message you're trying to send. Personal accountability and self-awareness go an incredibly long way when it comes to finding a connection with others. Companies especially know that their online personas can attract like-minded personalities. What is your online persona saying about you? Is it hindering the connections you're trying to make?

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Everyone should check out the recent US localization of Tokyo Godfathers—a great dub cast, including Shakina as Hana. As well, the new English subs on that same GKids Blu-ray are great (currently the Tubi version is still a fantastic film but some queer translation choices are unfortunately dated)

screenshot of a tumblr post from user “wildmansters” The thing that really boils my potatoes about Al in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist. But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this Al generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the Al Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building. I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.
