I teach American university students doing their semester/year abroad. It's never been more on my mind that their time with us is probably their first edu experience without any gun safety concerns. I have no idea if my previous students from Brown are safe rn. I'm sick with worry.

Rian Johnson is one of our Great Living Gothic artists. Wake Up Dead Man is his best yet. Fewer jump chuckles, but a deep and compelling irony permeates.

Now it’s unite behind @zackpolanski.bsky.social or Farage wins. Especially since we can’t trust Labour on anything.

Very telling that the Guardian Weekly article showing teenagers' reactions to Australia's social media ban have a bunch of healthy kids saying "Annoying but no biggie, I can wait two years" and one very disabled one saying "welp there goes my entire world."

Nigel Farage is probably delighted today that Reform have the most members of a political party.

It doesn't have to be this way.

180,000 and rising. Hope ready to overtake hate.

I've cancelled my licence fee direct debit - the law requires I pay it and I expect eventually I shall. But I'll make it as expensive as I can for them to collect. Let me contribute as little as possible to what it costs the BBC to spread its transphobic poison.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

seeing a lot of people saying they’re going to buy robin ince’s book after he had to leave his show due to the BBC’s institutional transphobia - pls do that, i’m not saying not to, but it would also be a good use of your money to give some directly to trans people in need

Sad to read the news about Stanley Baxter. He thought no one would love him if they knew he was gay. When he came out in his 90s he discovered a new generation loved him just as much. Here’s a wee piece I wrote for the @alloatiser Rest in peace Stanley. #ParliamoGlasgow #LGBT

Look, ignore the bullies is bad advice, but ignore the gifters is actually key - we have so much to do, they're a distraction, they're making money off distracting us, and advancing their own cause. Zero eyeballs policy guys!
Stop replying to the cinnabon lady should be free do do racism actually Atlantic guy, this is literally why he's doing it, all the engagement is just data he uses to go back to his rag and get another byline pushing more inflammatory garbage

important also to note that all the strikers are in prison on remand - they have not yet been to court, but have been held by the state for months. lammy hadn't even responded to correspondence from MPs about the hunger strike; there is no plausible deniability for uk govt here.
It’s hard to exaggerate how bad the situation is in the UK. There are eight people on hunger strike and David Lammy recently claimed he wasn’t even aware of it. That hunger strikers may actually die is barely even news.

Eight people are on hunger strike, several apparently at imminent risk of dying, because our law punishes more harshly those opposing genocide than those supporting it. (And under a so-called Labour Government.)

How on earth did we get here? www.vashtimedia.com/hunger-strik...
The hunger strikers are in mortal danger. But the conditions they’re being kept in are already critical.
How the government and its prisons ignore strikers' basic rights and demands.

What will we be covering on the romance course I'm teaching (online) next year?

Well... just to name a few things!

Scandalous 18th century women writing desire!
Austen classics!
Brooding Brontë 'heroes'!
Regency mysteries!
Hen-loving sapphics!
Much much more!

If you give working class people money, that money is going to go straight into their landlord’s pocket, until you fundamentally change the relationship between workers and housing!

This can’t lower rent, it always makes rents go up, because now the subsidy is calculated into the rate!

Here we go again. My brother has dual nationality, but he's white and straight, he's not who their nasty little code is insinuating. this is racially coded, unworkable nonsense playing to a base for whom the phrase 'how would that work in northern Ireland' is just an invitation to a sectarian rant.

After the missile attacks on boats, and immigration bullshit, this is the least subtle 'we're going to do some lynchings' announcement since the KKK pamphlet era. We need to turn quiet social media panic into full scale social action, and fast.
