Sh*t's goin' down in Boston, and the Devil deals the cards.

In the pocket of Big Dame.

Wo aber Gefahr ist, wächst das Rettende auch.

I'm telling myself this is the bit where it looks as if all is lost but the heroes persevere.

Like, sometimes you'll meet saintly people who are hugely into the Law of Attraction ("If I register as a bone marrow donor I will open myself to kindness!") or people who say they live their lives by the teachings of Jesus or the Buddha, yet are selfish & cruel.
If I wanted to tie this up in a bow with the liberal arts discourse, I'd say that it's all down to who you are going in: a good person will read Baldwin or Tolstoy & become more commited to liberation & justice & empathy, a bad person will expand their vocabulary for wicked persuasion, & the same-

When you want to help the helpless and people with learned helplessness count, I guess.

I made an extra piecrust but was too tired to make pie & tonight I realized I could roll it out, sprinkle it with cinnamon & sugar, roll it up, slice it into rounds, & bake it...but I had let too much time go by.

Also the OPAC at work was down but I thought it was me doing something wrong.

This is a great thread (my priors about the sort of people who get anything out of Brené Brown: confirmed.)
You know, it just occurred to me that I never reposted my old Twitter thread about the stuff I found in my car after it was recovered a month after being stolen. Spoiler! It was stolen by a woman. who left her journal in it.

There's "does a liberal arts education make you a better person" discourse & I will say that it may not save you from all evil paths but there are some evil paths from which it saves you.

Dawn turned on her purple pillow
And late, late came the winter day,
Snow was curved to the boughs of the willow.
The sunless world was white and grey.

At noon we heard a blue-jay scolding,
At five the last thin light was lost
From snow-banked windows faintly holding
The feathery filigree of frost.

They came but they have a terrible fishbowl effect (to be fair my prescription is very strong).

(The severity of nearsightedness correlating directly with intelligence is one of those canards I clasp to my bosom, like the one about migraines afflicting people of sensitive & creative temperament.)
Taking advantage of the Zenni sale (I also use my benefits to get glasses through my local optician but it's good to have options) & thinking of poor Anna in "The Golden Pince-Nez" getting read for filth in absentia by Mycroft for her poor vision & what it causes.

I would also be stuck sans specs.

Emily Dickinson's birthday is coming up & I was Googling her sherry-colored eyes & this came up & look: you can slick her hair down & dress her in a pleated bodice but the woman in the other daguerreotype has a face that knows what Myspace is. arollingcrone.blogspot.com/2013/12/my-h...

Mutuals, I warn you I may crash out on this but I want to send holiday cards! If you want one please DM me with your address!

If I have your address somewhere I can find it, you may get one in any case.

I have Christmas, Hanukkah, & general festive winter. And I have international stamps.

Reading about a conservative student club that's decided women can't be members any longer & I'm not sure who's doing a better job at decking out their face with delicious condiments for the face-eating leopards.

Number Three came along: it's no fun!
Bumped my head at the train station (I was picking up some change & stood up next to the signal arm), spilled my coffee all over the carpet, what next?

For most of my conscious life the worst thing you could be is someone with, as it were, a stick up your bum, & just a few years of "nothing matters lol" have been so bad for the world that I'd beg on my knees for sticklers & prigs & élitists.

And my knees *hurt* this week!
it is now more important than ever to become an enormous snob

Maggie Smith had shingles while filming one of the wizard movies and just wearing a wig hurt so much she'd weep with pain when she got home and didn't have to be On any more.

A hero but also get vaxxed!
All over my FB people talking about their bad experiences with shingles vax and dissuading each other from getting it! We need to give people real info on how to mitigate the symtoms caused by vaccines because vaccines are always better than meeting a virus unprepared. Yet drs aren't coaching ppl

We are finishing this; Holmes is engaged to Sophie Thompson (she's Milverton's maid but is nice & doesn't do any of the blackmailing); she's going to get her heart broken again the way she did in "Emma" & "Gosford Park" & "Dancing at Lughnasa".

Hurting a poor girl to save a rich one: Holmes, wtf?
Charles Augustus Milverton somehow feels even more evil than Moriarty.

We live in the age of people who use information for evil; a whole raft of Milvertons.

The trouble with me being on the wagon is that we go through seltzer at a devastating clip.

There may be some kind of constant function going on here, where W=wellbeing, H=health, R=relaxation, & A=alcohol, so W=(H/A)(RA)

But really it's not too bad!
