Remember, in totalitarian states, among the first people to be silenced are the artists, the poets, the writers. There's a reason for that.

Be that reason.

If you do art, keep doing art. Do it with as much passion as you can muster. Express yourself.
This is your reminder that writing is a political action.
I love the relaxed balance of this image, and the shadow of that tree against those delicious repeating geometric shapes.

A subset of pleasing lines and shapes, with occasional winter light, can make even a men's toilet in a 1950s brutalist building look good.

Lawdy, that coat. I mean, great portrait and all. But that coat.

Longcoats like that are another victim of car culture.

I do indeed - lots of video evidence and I've used it in quite a variety of different snows.
E-bike and studs are best but this is the tern pulling in slushy wet snow (that then froze solid so moving it was critically important) w/o studs

6 years ago, Trump pulled US forces out of Syria, abandoning the Kurdish allies who'd helped defeat ISIS. He left some US troops in place.

Why? Oil. He said, "We're keeping the oil. We have the oil. The oil is secure. We left troops behind only for the oil."

Venezuela? Same thing. It's about oil.
Q: What happens to the oil on the tanker you seized?

TRUMP: Well we keep it I guess

Jesus suffering fuck.

Trump ruins piracy. Our Flag Means Fuckwitted.
Trump: "It's been an interesting day from the standpoint of news. As you probably know, we've just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela. Largest one ever seized actually. And other things are happening."

Mobility options! Every city administrator should consider how to make year-round car-free travel better & safer. Put the welfare of people above the convenience of vehicles.

I am concerned about Santa's safety record. (This thread is a delight.)
Oh no! Old Saint Nick has crashed his sleigh and those no-good reindeer have abandoned him to his fate! Whatever is he to do?

Don't worry, old postcards have OPTIONS for Santa's delivery needs.

Hell is the home of the car-brained. It's an endlessly looping search for a parking spot, eternal idling in the school pick-up line, an everlasting traffic jam with irritated drivers honking & revving their engines.

Heaven is #bicycles. Quiet. Happy. Carefree. Car-free.
Why do people think the road to hell is paved at all? Are you planning to drive there?
More specifically, the road to hell is paved with the intention to make good things last.

I don't see this every day (I believe @evilgalprods.bsky.social has posted it every day since Trump returned), but every day I DO see it, I appreciate it. I find it encouraging. It's a sentiment that bears repeating.

Donald Trump can absolutely go fuck himself EVERY GODDAMN DAY.

I used to write the Sunday Salons--essays about photographers as a prompt for #photography discussions.

This 2007 salon is about John Humble, who scraped away the sedimentary layers of media-driven images of Los Angeles to find out what lay hidden beneath.

I drove through the Target parking lot to get to the pet shop that stocks the only thyroid-friendly treats the resident cat can eat. I figured it was permissible to shoot a photo of the bench & bike racks without violating the boycott.

For the photographers shouting, "But...but #streetphotography!" let me just say there's a very real qualitative difference between unmediated candid photography and creep photography.

There's a legit debate about street photo ethics, but defending this guy is NOT defending street photography.
In terms of what’s understood to be socially acceptable behavior, normalizing the filming/taking pictures of people in public who are minding their own business (and putting it online) is one of the worst developments of the past 15 years.
