"And then, as everything AI started to slide down the long downwards slope of the hype cycle, my job came back."

This corresponds with the what colleagues shared at the AVÜ meeting last weekend. Anecdotal evidence, but it is a silver lining at the end of the hype tunnel.

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

“I find it disheartening that instead of a society that once valorized translators as intercultural communicators and professionals who could uphold a bilingual society, we're flattening culture with AI systems that don't allow for a more organic exchange between languages.”

Many interesting testimonies about translators' working conditions going downhill in recent years are emerging around this post. Worth keeping an eye on them if you are a researcher too.
I'm preparing to publish the next installment of AI Killed My Job. This time, the focus will be on translators.

If you or someone you know has had a translation job (including translator, interpreter, game localizer, etc) impacted by AI, and you'd like to share, please do: [email protected]
AI is being used to justify firing workers at major tech companies, leaving those that remain to pick up the pieces.

AI code is being shoveled into crucial Google products, replacing trainers at TikTok, and worse.

This, in tech workers' own words, is how AI is killing jobs in Silicon Valley.
