The editors of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) were apparently fired today.

The precursor to MMWR began in 1878 to address emerging public health threats rapidly.

We are not “great” without it. We are vulnerable to threats from sporadic foodborne illness to bioterrorism.

Best to not actually pick up any alleged tear gas or smoke grenade or projectile. Too hot. And there’s been a lot of use of flashbangs. The misfire rate on them is not zero. Only a matter of time before some damn fool bleeds out because they lost a hand

The widespread media decision to frame international affairs as "will Donnie get the prize he wants?" is pathetic.

He's not the protagonist of human events. And to the extent he's a significant character in world affairs, whether or not he gets a prize is one of the least important things about it.

Sharing Jason Hammel’s thoughts this morning on community as resistance. For those outside Chicago, Jason is sort of the unofficial mayor of our food scene and the kind of mayor you’d want to vote for. They’re coming for our communities so let’s be out in our communities if we can.

If you're asking yourself, how do I respond? What can I do? I have a simple suggestion. Go out to eat.
Let's think about the restaurants in our neighborhoods. Almost everyone I talk to has said that this terror in our cities has caused slow nights, quiet days, which means those in our community who need it the most are worried about their hours being cut, lower tips, about not having what they need to provide for their families.

Just like in the pandemic it's about the front line. It's about the deep economic chain linking our food business to farms and florists and delivery drivers to every server, cook, and dishwasher in your local restaurants. And my suggestion is about having you all out here, being present, showing up, letting them know we are behind you.

In the hospitality industry we know that good service begins with the ones closest to you. The ones on your team. People of Chicago, of Portland, of Washington
DC, let's fill the streets, the cafes, the bars and coffee shops, the restaurants of every kind. Show generosity to those closest to us by dining in.

I'm flipping the script on what I asked in
2020. Back then it was order take out, support our local business. Today I'm saying come on in, go out tonight, pack every neighborhood. But it's the same reason in the end. These workers depend on us. And they are being terrorized. They need our eyes, our voices to keep them safe. It's by being here that we can show our gratitude for the front line in this battle and honor their hope to realize a dream.

Freedom of speech “never passed the courts…”

Un-American speech, even from a wanna be dictator, is protected.

Dear Dems, Vought is a huge vulnerability. People who will stick by the MAGA King will not stand up for his Worm-tongued puppet master. Neither will the King if he sees weakness. King doesn’t care about Project 2025, but in his own self-aggrandizement. We saw this with Musk. Russ can be the villain.

Some Dems see “…a ‘trap’ enticing them into a losing debate about crime. But why assume voters will believe Trump’s occupations are actually about combating crime? This throws in the towel, right up front, on communicating what this debate is really about: Trump’s abuses…”

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

New from me:

Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.

The Trump regime's war on Christianity continues, as regime troops attacks Americans across the United States and rounds up majority Christian immigrants, they've also targeted religious leaders.

Here the Trump regime ICE forces shot a pastor in the head in the latest attack on civilians.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
