Parents of young adult children or people who have jobs with gen z colleagues (or rare Actual Young Ppl On here): I want to interview someone who's done any kind of government employment scheme (whether apprenticeship or other) for a book (fiction). Would appreciate any tipoffs!

Day 9 of our annual #AdventCalendar takes us to the dramatic Hautes Pyrenees, home to a wonderful array of alpine ringlets, including the heavily eye-spotted and richly-coloured Piedmont Ringlet, a charismatic butterfly that always makes our day.

1/2 #speciesaday no. 681 is Sericomyia lappona. A very smart and distinctive large, almost black and white hover with a conker for a scutellum. Restricted to boggy sites, much commoner in the north and west but also New Forest. Not common in Sussex. My records are between 30th May and 20th June.

It appears that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, within the past week, scrubbed a large amount of climate change content from its official website, as well as *removed human-caused warming* from the discussion on its "causes of climate change" page.

Betula bark, labelled as B. ermanii 'Grayswood Hill', though this should be a selection with pure white bark. the bark of the species is described as creamy white and pinkish, fawn when first exposed. I would have a grove of seed-raised birches though, and revel in the variation of colour.

Arbutus menziesii, Madroño. The beauty of this gorgeous bark, with chestnut coloured outer bark, peeling to reveal the smooth, olive green inner bark. This is cool to the touch, and smooth as the skin on the inner thigh of a maiden, or so I have been told. Is very lovely.

Acer capillipes.
trawling through the archives, I discover I have relatively few pictures of bark in winter. I'm not sure why, but this is the season to remedy this omission.

The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.
