I originally only wanted to do a little dive into how most of my colleagues and friends in my sector keep ending up as either solo consultants or coaches!

Now it's got little-to-nothing to do with my sector at all, and looks at all flavours of work in all sorts of organisation sizes.

The really cool thing is that I'm absolutely going to need to restructure, because every day I discover or remember some additional horror that feels critical, and I can't help but aim for something unreasonably comprehensive for the format.

Maybe this needs to be a series, rather than one post?

A more sensible person would either give up, or scrap this and write a book. Not me, I'm a stubborn creature that will write this piece even if it kills me and nobody on earth is ever likely to read anything that long

"I'll just do a little blog post on why work (the concept) currently completely sucks and is bad for literally every individual, business, and government, unless there's a massive sweeping correction and what corrections might help"

Done planning, and 1/5 done on scene-setting and I'm 3200 words in

I'm so bad at so many things that I'm regularly doing at the minute and it's GREAT. You should all go and do something you really badly suck at for like a week. It's good for the soul.

I remain terrible, but I'm still enjoying figure sketching. Even at only one a day I can still taste the improvement.

I annotate them A LOT, and even though most amount to "What in the low-budget horror movie is that?!", I get a little buzz from the lone "Hey, that's a really well-constructed arm!"

”im addicted to this Buddhism game” —things someone who is good at buddhism would say???

Update: Spent several weeks under implementation paralysis because I massively over-engineered the problem in a way that would have made my life substantially worse even if I did manage to wrap the text in the way I wanted to.

Had a super productive day - did my grammar, my vocab, my reading, my other reading, several (bad) figure drawings, and "futzing about in Godot, achieving absolutely nothing, and in fact ending up with even less than the little I already had, but at least figuring out how not to do something???"

Update: This is the worst idea I've ever had, wrapping text around an image that ideally needs to be in its own node is a complete nightmare

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

So since the Online Safety Act went into force, British people have:
- Been locked out of all but the sketchier porn sites
- Seen a man get shot in the head and die while scrolling twitter
- Got their ID stolen via a data leak.

Well I sure feel safer online now.

Anyway, with the CEO crashing out I would like to issue a friendly reminder that Bluesky is a VC-bacled platform operating on growth logic for ROI. One day the user experience will be as rotten as the moderation.

Anyway, you can also follow me on Mastodon at @[email protected]

Font pairing: HOW?

What makes fonts pair well? What are the first principles here? I don't think I can even tell when fonts are well-paired, let alone actually do it.

I cannot believe that you would say something so controversial that I entirely agree with but have always been too afraid to say

In my defence, I probably have a lot to learn from Hades specifically anyway, so I'll just call it research
hannahl.co.uk
I can't wait to finish Silksong, because then I'll be able to play Hades 2 and STILL not have enough time to both work on that game idea I've been sitting on for ages now because I absolutely refuse to drop the daily sketches or any of my language work

A lot of the excuses boil down to social media brain poisoning. Likes aren't real validation, nor are they income, nor are they value.

You social media presence can disappear overnight, or you might have to rebuild elsewhere. Your website, however, is there for as long as you keep it there.

Some excuses I've seen:

- "My stuff doesn't have value" (it does, you've just got brain gremlins)
- "It's too complicated" (There are lots of friendly folks happy to help - just ask)
- "What about my throwaway stuff" (It's your own damn website. You can separate everyday pieces from portfolio!)

Since I'm seeing so many people on the "I want to leave Bluesky because of horrible people and horrible moderation" train I am once again tapping the big sign that reads "YOU NEED A WEBSITE".

I am tapping it more aggressively if you are any sort of artist or creator.

Maybe the frustration comes from seeing a lot of people declare it "too confusing" but never specifying what exactly they're confused by, and how this is worse than Bluesky (which runs its official services from multiple places, and seemingly obscures usernames in ways I find confusing)
hannahl.co.uk
Seriously, I hardly follow anyone, and I feel like I encounter a "username not valid" error at least once every day.

Never get that issue on Mastodon, provided the host instance (which they make transparent to you!) isn't down (and then it'll generally be obvious when that's the case).
