I love when my translators have questions. The splendid Mikael Cabon in France needs to know if a river in Written on the Dark flows into the sea or into another river: his word choice will be different.

When translators are careful it is a gift to an author AND a reminder to protect them from AI.

Don't use the tool of the oppressor!

(he said, writing this statement on a Windows 11 PC, but even so)
Using gen. A.I. to make slop imagery to go with any anti-fascist statement isn't any sort of flex as it was developed and promoted by the billionaires pushing fascism.
Just fucking stop using it.

Bari Weiss saying the "Wild West of social media" is not a naive statement about the supposed free flow of expression online, but a cynical denial of the corporate-driven idea machine that it actually is.

She knows what it really is. It's why we know her name.

My favorite part of “no more snow days since y’all can work remotely”, is how it refuses to account for the time and energy to dig yourself out of the aforementioned snow.

That’s part of what the snow day is for, knuckleheads.

That last quote is the gut punch and also unsurprising.
They were eventually allowed one phone call as a thanks for saving the agent’s life.

They used it to call their lawyer, who called their state representative, who ultimately got them released on the condition they tell people they were “treated kindly.”

Is there an enewsletter platform that's not trying to squeeze unnecessary "AI" features into it's service?

If they don't wield the levers of power, then they should start throwing wrenches.
I love you all and am holding your hand as I say this:

Dems wield zero hard power levers
it's kind of crazy that there's even any question that democrats are going to do anything about this

Thinking about the vast amount of free labor we have all done since the turn of the millennium that have enriched some of the worst people in the world.

Photos, art, music, writing - so much writing.

Totally thought this was about the book by William Godwin and was going to offer that I split the difference in a short paper called "Caleb Williams is an Idiot" but that's not who this is about. Carry on.
I hope I never figure out whether I think that Caleb Williams is "good" or not.

The other thing about normalizing gAI use in higher ed is that we are teaching our students that they cannot trust their own creativity, their own thoughts and brains, their own skills without having it reshaped/shellacked/transmogrified by LLMs. We’re setting them up for failure and dependence.

Do they define culture as "something everybody sees while they're scrolling to the thing they actually want to see"?

I never chose to engage with Morbius, the algorithm chose it for me. I guess that's culture now.
But like man, I can’t take seriously people who say Morbius had more cultural impact because of some memes. But people say this! Regularly!

I really want to use LibreOffice but the JDK requirement for using their database is giving me headaches.

Any alternatives to LibreOffice that's offline and not Microsoft?

Any clue as to how to get this damn Java shit to work?

I always say Thank You when I ask Siri to set an alarm.
(this is the extent of my use, besides "Hey Siri, how many Lynel's are in Breath of the Wild?")

But today is the day that I am raining down expletives like brimstone on any Automated Service Simulator that asks me "How can I help you today?"

Why do we need middlemen to make drugs cheaper?
Other middlemen.
