It’s just wild the cultural differences from a blue city in a red state to a blue city in a blue state. Loving that this is proudly front and center in my new school district.

After six weeks off, I’m finally starting to think and plan for this upcoming school year. My brain wouldn’t let me do it before, but now I’m just kind of ready to start learning about my new school district and school.

I can’t understate how strange it is to move from Texas to a blue state as a school librarian/administrator. I’ve been really tired, a little sick here and there, and just generally low energy. I think my body and mind are slowly detoxing. It’s a strange place to be in so I take one day at a time.

They’re planning on building a detention center for migrants in the middle of the fetid swamps of Florida.

If you think this is something new, the first internment camp they sent me and my family to in 1942 was a barbed wire prison called Rohwer. It was located in the swamps of Arkansas.

What if we stopped turning away and started leaning into empathy?

What if compassion weren’t seen as weakness but honored as our greatest strength?

What if we worked tirelessly so that every child felt safe, seen, and loved in their schools, neighborhoods, and homes?

Bill would add public review period for all new school library purchases and require school board approval of each + ban “sexually explicit” books

I just called and talked to young staffers telling them why SB13 was a bad idea, that schools already have required policy for reconsideration of library books, and that school librarians don't have enough money to buy enough books so they won't buy "bad" ones.

1- Contact Todd Hunter (chair of the House Calendars Committee)
2- Contact your State House rep

Urge them NOT to move on SB 13- the school library book ban bill.
