Think about buying a car, a fun, stress-free negotiating process that everybody loves. Now imagine that if you don’t buy a car you die and if you buy the wrong car you also die
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

We are in a timeline in which People Magazine is publishing legit hard-hitting news headlines while CBS and CNN publicly humiliate themselves.

I don’t like this timeline. But I’m loving People Magazine right now.

I, for one, welcome our Dumb Things overlords.

I'm not even being facetious here.

Bring back the single-function thingies.
One of the reasons I love retro-SF futures is because they speak to this increasing trend of turning shit off and disconnecting devices. When AWS goes down and bricks your bed, fridge, and thermostat, the appeal of analog is keenly felt.

This is crucial and it's conceptually emblematic of how the media is failing us by not connecting the dots. This is true with HHS, voting rights, the economy, the environment and all of the vulnerable groups the magas are attacking.

We are shown the tiles 24/7 but we are not shown the mosaic.
It’s easy to lose sight of how radical the MAGA agenda is by focusing on each action in isolation. Only by glancing at the entirety of what Trump and Hegseth have wrought can one see what a far-reaching assault they are mounting on the apolitical professionalism of the US military. bit.ly/47aHw7J

This is why the inflatable costumes works so well -- it works the same way calling them "weird" or "creepy" did. It disrupts their narrative, and makes them seem pathetic rather than cool-and-cruel.
You need to see this:

“I spent three nights and three days in federal custody. During that time, I was never told what I was charged with, was not allowed to shower despite being covered in tear gas and pepper spray, had no phone call to my family, and no access to an attorney.” - George Retes, U.S. citizen and veteran.
I’m a US citizen and a veteran. ICE arrested me for no reason.
Jailed for three days without an explanation or ability to notify anyone, George Retes argues the only path to healing starts with the government taking accountability for its actions.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Signalgate 2.0, this time not about plans for attacking Houthis in Yemen, but sending the 82nd Airborne to Portland, Oregon
this is wild: while Stephen Miller's guy was in Minnesota for his uncle's funeral, somebody was able to see his entire phone and take pictures of his Signal group chats talking about military deployments to Portland, and brought them to the Strib (gift link: www.startribune.com/trump-offici...)

Says CSIS, "the sudden decline in right-wing terrorism is both more striking and harder to explain" but actually it's not; right-wing kidnappings and attacks on civilian transports have increased dramatically but aren't categorized as "terrorism" because they now occur under the aegis of the state.

Q: My condolences on the loss of your friend Charlie Kirk. How are you holding up?

TRUMP: I think very good. And by the way, right there you see all the trucks. They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they've been trying to get for about 150 years.
