There are two wolves inside me – one would like to order a properly made signature stamp, like the one for ceramics, while the other says that it is enough to make stamps of various sizes each time I make a linocut, and at some point I will have a large collection of them

My favorite artifact in the "you don't need AI to do art" discourse is, of course, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's sketch of the facehugger to explain it to Giger.

Democratizing the arts looks like universal income, low-barrier grants for both emerging and working artists, well-funded municipal arts & recreation programs, vibrant third spaces, and a well-funded public school system with progressive curriculum.

A small but very deep thing that bothers me about generative AI as a shortcut to practice and work and skill is the basic assumption that it’s impossible to take pleasure in a creative pursuit that you aren’t very good at and I assure you that is not the case

I am certain that whenever someone posts about “gatekeeping art” or whatever, they’re talking about posting drawings online for clicks. They never mean arranging rocks in the back yard. They never mean whistling to yourself and finding a tune that makes you happy. They never mean napkin doodles.
