There’s a a humanist parenting fantasy where conversations with your kids are always going to be full of wonderful questions, each an idealised step in their development. But the real challenge for raising freethinkers is supporting them to ask, reflect and listen more effectively.

I've pre-ordered the audiobook for 'Life on the Bridge: Linking My World to Yours as an Autistic Therapist' by Kaelynn Partlow - It's been on my list for a while, and I wanted to order it after seeing a short of her recording the audiobook version.

Z is for Zen. My final post in the A-Z of humanist parenting, explores how cultivating mindfulness can help you appreciate the chaos of parenting and reconnect with your values. Humanist parenting philosophies ground these values in our connection to and experience of naturalism.

Those of us who’ve been around for a while—even not in the UK—have noticed how fucking feral the UK mainstream media has gone. Notice that the peak on the left for anti-trans articles is over 1,000 in a **30 day period**, and the end date on the horizontal axis is **2022**. bsky.app/profile/polp...
a stat i always cite is the number of anti-trans articles in the press went from 60 in a year, to 7,500

If they let the trans in the schools they'll learn to read, oh noes!!

(Seriously, what the fuck do they think trans kids do from the ages of 5 to 12?)

I'd love a few more readers of my last A-Z of humanist parenting post - Y is for Yes. Reflecting on my language and values, I realised how much of my parenting is about creating conditions where my kids can give a safe informed “Yes” to new ideas, experiences and activities.

Not the biggest issue with this, but our Parliament is such an embarrassing joke that you need prayer cards to get a seat. Let's stop fetishising anachronism and adversarialism. For goodness sake give them a modern accessible semicircular chamber.
Spoiler alert…

The name left on the prayer card on the Reform bench was SMITH

I asked the doorkeeper to check the list for any new defections but he was as bemused as me…

So either a defection in the offing or someone changing their name overnight. Not long to wait and see who sits in that seat 🕵🏻
Apparently there’s a rogue prayer card on the reform bench this morning, possibly signalling another defection at PMQs…

Anyone want to guess on who is the latest traitor to be unmasked??

I'm going back over last month's event report on "Environmentalism: a humanist response to the climate crisis", as I prepare for a meeting on asylum and immigration. There're a lot of shared issues and themes, and I hope we can replicate last month's sense of hope and humanisation.
Environmentalism: a humanist response to the climate crisis (Event report)
Our community group’s event with a local climate journalist explored humanist perspectives on nature, individual versus collective action, and optimism verses urgency.

It’s a reminder of how completely unserious our nation is that we have a live illustration of where this leads in Minnesota and yet everyone pretends a Reform government is just an ok idea.

The UK version of “Project 2025” by the Reform party includes a British ICE, a concentration camp for 24,000 people, mass surveillance and withdrawing from refugee, anti-torture and anti-trafficking conventions.

It’s on their website. That’s how comfortable fascists are in the UK today.

Humanist values can encourage our children to think critically, gain cultural literacy and engage positively with diversity. Xenophilia is love for or appreciation of foreign people and cultures. When I think of Xenophilia more broadly and in relation to my humanist parenting, I think about: Supporting my children to be comfortable with difference and diversity.

It's not hyperbolic to say that people in the UK shouting at migrants in hotels, assaulting people in the street, making racist FB comments, will be the ones signing up to whatever force emerges a couple of years into a UK government elected on this white supremacist platform.
