V useful @eui-eu.bsky.social paper on how populists including Trump, Orbán, AMLO, Milei transform democratic states:

“administrative transformation is
not just a side effect of illiberal rule; it is a strategic cornerstone
to advance authoritarian dominance”

Listening to a trade policy panel on reforming subsidies rules in a Tuscan chapel at @eui-eu.bsky.social World Trade Forum in Florence….(perks of the job!)

But indeed it would require divine intervention to get the needle moving on this one these days!

. Après on s’étonne de la défiance populaire envers l’ensemble de la classe politique.

(2) Commission always supports countries/ sectors targeted by AD measures - including by filing complaintd at WTO.

So: Not a big deal, standard US protectionist machinery in action indepentent of whether Trump in power. And yes, US anti-dumping duties are very high compared to those apploed by EU
ianadreyer.bsky.social
Well….

(1) This pasta case is an anti-dumping case. Established procedure based on sector complaint. This is not a Trump tariff threat as we have witnessed this year. Fairly common for Dpt of Commerce to investigate EU products. And to also single out countries. Spanish olives recently

If politics are going crazy in several European countries one after the other, I think it is time to go past blaming the failures of individual political actors (and there are quite a few, both in the UK and France) to looking at the systemic pressures our political systems are failing to deal with.

If you are overly focused on the admittedly increasingly batsh*t character of British politics, don‘t neglect the batsh*t character of French politics.

The general idea also fails to recognize that authoritarian regimes are not simply one man. They are entire systems with many people having an interest in keeping that system going.

Trump could walk away tomorrow, and the descent of the US into authoritarian rule would not suddenly stop.

I see the centrist dads are out in force putting the "well it could be worse" spin on this combination of at worst plain and simple xenophobia driven policy and at best, apparently, xenophobia with a pinch of classism as well, whereby the "most contributing" members of society can get ILR quicker.
