The message is that cars are inherently dangerous.
Self driving cars will, imo, probably turn out to be a partial mitigation, and it's shameful to see so many attack self driving rather than the routine violence of everyday cars.

I really dislike blood-and-soil-urbanism. The idea that, for example, you're more authentically a New Yorker if you've lived there longer or if your grandparents & parents lived there.

This is a timely reminder to be nice to retail employees, even if you think you are too important to do that.
In the 2000s, I worked at a bookstore, but by the time this story takes place, I was mostly in the cafe. If things got busy, they'd pull me out to work on the other side of the store...
