thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

That press conference shows the tragedy of Eric Adams. He had some real successes: City of Yes, trash containerization, crime reductions, etc. but couldn't stop tripping over all the bags of money he and his aides kept taking from people and now thinks it's the media's fault for reporting on it.

The essence of Bari Weiss: not reporting, but crude partisan propaganda presented in the form of reporting—and usually pronounced from the mouths of anonymous sources which likely don't exist. Expect this sort of prolefeed at CBS News soon.

apparently the secret to Postseason Baseball™️ is for me to give up hope entirely and for Hunter to call in a favor with his close personal friend Aaron Judge
hunterw.bsky.social
Aaron Judge, who, as you can see, is my close personal friend, is now batting .524 this postseason.

He has been involved in ten of the Yankees' 23 runs, which is like 43 percent of their offense.

He has also made great catches. He does it all.

Judge is the best hitter of his generation, by far.
Aaron Judge and I hanging out as we so often do.

perhaps this was too rude—Sorkin is a bit of a hack, but a structurally competent one, and the Emily Mortimer in The Newsroom monologue where this idiotic quote would appear would be the button on some episode-long tête-à-tête between her and Jeff Daniels in re: what they're even doing here

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."
