Occasionally remember that I made Space Nazis the antagonists in my military space opera that I once briefly published and honestly I was just thinking of cartoon villains at the point I came up with it, but I wish it hadn't proved so fucking prescient.

We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

Ye gods but humans are tribal, eh? Just love putting people in groups, assuming they're all the same, and so terrified of any perceived differences. Such a small, scared, insecure species...

Elmer Fudd is in bed with a beautiful woman, but she's sad. She says she feels all alone in the world. Elmer says, "The treatment is simple. The great bunny Bugs is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." And the woman bursts into tears. Says, "But Elmer...I am Bugs Bunny."

Good thread, very informative. NB a key reason the traditional publishers' advance/royalties finance model no longer supports most UK authors is that assumes steady backlist sales but these days publishers don't take returns on titles more than 18 months old, so high street shops don't stock them.
I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

When our son was 10 he would ask questions about whatever narrative we were consuming together and it took one talk like "those questions you're always asking are called the story and if you're patient you'll find that they get answered eventually" and a lot of the internet needs that refresher.
"WHY'S SHE DOING THAT?? WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT, I'M BORED" well the cool thing about following a narrative is that eventually if you keep watching or reading or listening, magical bits of information are doled out

I'd introduce myself in four spaceships but Klingon battlecruisers come in threes.

Thread.
Since we are once again dealing with "the only silent era comedians of note were men" I feel I need to stand up for the ladies.

I'm such a sucker for first person narration I'm apparently more reading a random Nina Bawden from the 80s. Haven't read one of hers since I was a young lad - didn't even know she wrote for adults!

I think part of the piracy problem is we used to have a record industry where most people bought records/tapes/CDs/books occasionally but we still had loads of secondhand shops for bargains and the radio/TV for free* and apparently artists could make a decent living, even "midlist" ones...

Heads up, #BookSky 💙📚! I, for one, enjoyed the shenanigans of drunken idiots blasting their way around ancient, monster-infested underground ruins, and so might you!
I see the first 3 books in the God Fragments are all just £2.99 at the moment, which is a much better price than usual! In case like me you also enjoy drunken idiots blasting their way around ancient, monster-infested underground ruins

I don't go looking for reviews of my work (that way lies trauma), but the lovely @rainewilson.bsky.social spotted this and shared it with me:

The Skiffy and Fanty Show: Book Review: CL Hellisen’s The Shape of Monsters
Hellisen’s work is shot through with mordant, often wry humor, especially from Aleks. This does leaven and lighten the mood and tone at points and primes the reader for the next dark twist and turn…

In the span of a hour, they stealth edited the article from trans woman to "biological male who identifies as a woman." The BBC isn't fit for purpose.
It looks like that BBC page has been updated in the last few minutes, so that's no longer the last sentence. I think part of it has been moved to this paragraph in the middle of the article, and the age is no longer mentioned:

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who's coming to save you?
(If I'd known this was coming I'd have chosen different lunchtime viewing!)

Increasingly the state of trans rights in the UK is that things that have been settled aspects of these rights for more than two decades are being stripped away. The idea that "trans activists" are making novel demands is ludicrous.

UK people, Amazon are currently offering the paperback of Fight Like A Girl #2 for just £4.64. That's less than the book costs to print, and less than the ebook price. It looks like someone is doing a warehouse clearance. There are only 14 copies left, so get yours now.

Truth
Always worth taking a moment to remind you if you’re pirating authors’ book you’re a shitty person. You can rail that our profession isn’t a profession all you want. You can paint yourself as an online revolutionary liberating ideas. It’s all bullshit.

You’re just a shitty person who hates writers.

I love when a book doesn’t wait politely at the door but kicks it in and drags you straight into the story. A Good Day to Die is exactly that kind of book.

Today you get the actual first chapter.

It’s perplexing that the BBC is currently under scrutiny for a supposed liberal bias in favour of trans rights.
Here, a spokesperson for an anti-trans group is quoted, the article says that trans inclusion would be illegal (it wouldn’t) and lists an anti-trans organisation for more info.

This site targets not just authors, but small press zines and anthologies - including Clarkesworld, Neon Hemlock, Apex, and the Science Fiction Poetry Association.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.
