Today marks 106 years since my great uncle, PVT Sylvester Stephen Payne, died of pneumonia in France on the final day of WWI. His last letter home to his father, my great grandfather, was written two months earlier.

The timing of Hegseth’s current anti-Harvard move is likely because of a sudden turn Trump took last week. For months, Trump has attempted to squeeze Harvard for a $200 million settlement (over charges of … well, being Harvard, basically), and his efforts recently seemed to have reached a dead end.
Hegseth, among others, is using the school as a punching bag to express the generic social anxiety and status-based resentment that drives much of the MAGA movement.

Put another way, this is an admission that ICE officers are so unprofessional and inadequately trained that simply being criticized might cause them to lose control and resort to violence.
