very funny that the White House defense of that video is essentially “no no, the staffer meant to post it to his personal account”

Great piece, and pleasantly surprised to realize the author also wrote one of my favorite reads from last year, “The Inland Sea.”
Early motherhood can be isolating, terrifying, transformative. To prepare herself, Madeleine Watts turned to literature—the more honest, the better.

Is creating new life in the face of rising authoritarianism, a casually accepted genocide, and climate collapse inherently cruel?

Expectant mothers were left so hungry after the U.S. cut foreign food aid that one woman ate clay and charcoal.

Her baby struggled to gain weight after being born prematurely.

Photographs tell a story of two mothers determined to help their babies gain enough weight to leave the hospital — only to face little to no food again.

It's interesting that wise conservative business guys implicitly understand "return on investment" except when it comes to this. It's better for YOU if your neighbor gets enough to eat so he can become your community's mechanic, accountant, dentist--whatever!--instead of lying dead in a ditch
The welfare state is about dignity, equality, and making people not poor, but as @itsafronomics.bsky.social says/cites here, it’s often also an investment that more than pays for itself
Why should you 🫵🏿 care about SNAP? SNAP recipients saw:

- Improved life expectancy
- Lower chance of incarceration
- Lowers chance of poverty
- Lived in better neighborhoods
- Higher human capital

SNAP keeps our neighbors fed, communities safer, and kids educated. Also people are HUNGRY. DUH!

Underrated discomfort in pregnancy is that I can’t like, cross my arms anymore, or rest a phone/laptop when lying down. The weight pushing down gives me immediate acid/nausea. The little things!

On June 24, I began my Election Night speech by quoting Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” That's the spirit of this campaign, and our city.

This is "Until It’s Done,” a new series about New Yorkers who refused to accept that a worthy goal was impossible.

RFK Jr: It's gonna be the biggest infusion of federal dollar into rural healthcare in American history

BERNIE SANDERS: Yeah. You know why? Because you're cutting $150b for rural hospitals, you're putting $50b back. That's not an infusion. That's a loss of $100b.

Immigrants and advocates tell me that MPD's growing cooperation with ICE on immigration enforcement in D.C. has made them fearful to call local police if they witness a crime or are victims of one. The internet has "leveled the playing field" in an unhealthy way. Most people with years of training, decades of experience, and a proven track record of making the world a better place are at a disadvantage to the glib, charismatic motherfuckers who can spew bullshit for hours on end.
"debate" gamifies politic conversation and replaces the actual stakes of the subject being debated with interpersonal stakes of clout and such. the demand for the version of civility that features in these conversations amounts to trying to water down even the interpersonal stakes

People are being forced out of DC. The cost of living is too high, and Trump is waging an all-out assault on the District.

It should be easier and more affordable to build a life here.

That's why I’m running for DC Council in Ward 1.
