probably one of the more intense ones I've seen? maybe because it's so shallow?
(not sure to what degree other atmospheric circulations are contributing)

it's quite a unique case!

our research group has been obsessed with the decay and remnants of Octave this week. such a persistent (and adorable?!) low-level circulation 😍

Anticipating steep cuts to its budget, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, one of the world’s leading climate research centers, has laid off 29 employees and decided not to fill 21 vacant positions. https://scim.ag/46yaM9g

And with the 15z advisories -- #Hurricane #Imdelda & #Humberto are just 479 miles apart.

This might be the closest two simultaneous hurricanes have ever been in the Atlantic basin in the satellite era (since ~1975).

Close enough for their outer sfc circulations to interact as well.

Yesterday was the wettest day in quite some time for northeastern Colorado. Widespread observations of over 1" of rain, and over 2" in some spots on the Plains.

Several inches of snow in the mountains too!

Map of precipitation from CoAgMET on September 23, 2025. It shows over 1" of rain across all of northeast Colorado, with a maximum of 2.33" at Akron.

which like... maximize those WR bonuses, man! 💪
jcdehart.bsky.social
he raises the WR each time by a small increment, right? not negating his obvious talent, but he probably could have broken it fewer times by larger amounts.

🚨 Recruiting Two PhD/MS Students 🚨

I am looking to bring on at least two GRAs (M.S. or Ph.D. Level) beginning Spring or Fall 2026 to join our CHAOS research group. Research projects will be related to artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for extreme temperatures and rainfall
jcdehart.bsky.social
also isn't AI a "key priority" ...
jcdehart.bsky.social
it did! thank you again for the suggestions!
jcdehart.bsky.social
very serious note-taking on my part!

NEW: The highest level of drought, D4/exceptional, is now in place for the Western Slope + Flat Tops.

This is the first 'exceptional' drought anywhere in Colorado in over 2 years (May 2023).

Also highest % of exceptional drought in over 4 years (July 2021).
